Heartland's Summer Camp: Building Character,
Confidence and
Compassion
 We can't believe that the seventh week of our
popular summer camp is over - the summer is flying by! Due to this year's expanded enrollment, we are welcoming more kids to the barn than ever before, and the campers are enjoying their days filled with barn chores, animal care, games, crafts, hiking, meditation, yoga and more!
Our fruit and vegetable gardens are also in full bloom and the campers are enjoying selling the ultra-local produce at our "farmers' market" at camp pick-up time. All donations from the produce sales go to our garden fund for next year's supplies.
The remaining weeks of camp are still full, but stay tuned to our website for more information about our Saturday Fall Camp!

Animal Updates:
New rescues:
Xena and
Pebbles are Heartland's newest chicken residents!
Both hens were rescued as youngsters and spent the last few months being fostered by our Avian Consultant, Quincy.
Xena (left) was hatched on a farm and rescued just in the nick of time by a vet who happened to be there checking on another animal. Because of Xena's severe crossed beak, she had been put in a plastic bag to suffocate. The vet took her, and she fortunately made her way to Quincy. When provided with the proper food/water dishes, crossed beak birds can live full and happy lives!
Pebbles (right) was purchased by a teenager from a local farm store. The teen originally purchased two chickens, but the other unfortunately passed away due to inadequate care. Pebbles was surrendered to Quincy shortly after as the teen's family couldn't afford to keep her (and they didn't want chickens in the first place). This is just one reason why an animal should never be an impulse buy.

Ginger the Lamb: Little Ginger, who came to stay with us at the end of May, went to her forever home this month. Ginger was rejected by her mother and needed special care. When Ginger returned to her farm after being cared for in a home, she had difficulty fitting in with the other sheep and preferred the company of people. We were more than happy to care for this little girl while her new family was getting ready for her arrival. Ginger (now named Petunia) is spending her days with her fantastic family (with six kids who adore her!) and she is getting lots of attention and love. We are so happy when we can help animals in their transition to better circumstances.
 Agnus is going home! Our potbellied pig boarder, Agnus, will also be departing for her new home the first week of August. Her family has purchased a 2-acre farm and she will join another mini pig there! She has been a wonderful, well-behaved boarder and we will miss her so much. Thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers who took such great care of Agnus during her time at Heartland! We love being able to keep happy families together!

Sue has been volunteering with Heartland for several years, starting as an animal care volunteer on Monday nights. She has also volunteered with our Farm on Wheels program, assisting with taking animals out into the community. Now Sue spends her time volunteering as our Tour Coordinator, setting up
private tours and
field trips to the farm. This is such an important task, as it saves our staff tons of time and allows more people to visit Heartland and connect with our animals and mission. She is such an important part of the Heartland family and we're so lucky to have her as a dedicated volunteer and supporter!

At Heartland, we house as many farm animals as is financially and humanely possible. Unfortunately, the large number of animals that need a safe home is much higher than the Heartland barn can contain. Our Heartland Rehoming Program was created to help connect farm animals in need of a home to people looking to adopt a new companion.
