Portland Japanese Garden (Portland, OR)

The International Japanese Garden Training Center at the Portland Japanese Garden will be holding its "Waza to Kokoro" seminar. This certificate program is open to professional gardeners working in Japanese gardens, landscape design and construction professionals, and students of landscape-related disciplines. For details, please click here. The seminar is under the support of the Center for Global Partnership Grassroots Program.


The Center for Global Partnership and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) are accepting applications for the Abe Fellowship and Abe Fellowship for Journalists competitions. Please see our website for details on the programs and information on how to apply. Abe Fellowship applications are due September 1; Abe Fellowship for Journalists applications are due September 15.

Performance
August 22 & 23, 6 - 10pm
Venue: MacPhail Center for Music (Minneapolis, MN)

Don't miss this rare opportunity to learn about Edo Bayashi, the festival music of old Tokyo, from Suzuki Kyosuke, a master musician and dancer of the Wakayama Performance Troupe. Suzuki is an engaging and enthusiastic teacher, regarded by many as the "best shishi-mai (Japanese lion dance) dancer" of Tokyo. All events are open to the public. This event is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts and Culture.

Exhibition
August 4 - November 5
Various venues in Yokohama (Kanagawa, Japan)

The Yokohama Triennale, one of the leading international exhibitions of contemporary art in Japan, will open its sixth edition on August 4, under the title Islands, Constellations & Galapagos. This edition will examine the current state of the world through connectivity and isolation. Special cooperation is provided by The Japan Foundation.

August 15 - December 23
Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS)

Enrico Isamu Ōyama represents a contemporary generation with a distinctly global perspective. As a child of an Italian father and a Japanese mother, Ōyama grew up in Tokyo, lived for extended periods in Northern Italy, and has been working in New York since 2011. Ubiquitous surveys how Ōyama channeled his interests in Tokyo and American street cultures, Western abstract art, and Japanese calligraphy to create Quick Turn Structure (QTS), his signature expression. This exhibition is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts and Culture.

Japanese Language

The Nippon Club (New York, NY)

The next JF Japanese Language Course Conversation Café will be held on Thursday, September 14, 6:30 pm at The Nippon Club. Practice Japanese with native speakers and fellow Japanese learners over a cup of Japanese tea and snacks! All levels are welcome! Space is limited and RSVP is required. Lecture

Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR)

Marc P. Keane, landscape architect and renowned author of multiple books on Japanese garden design and history, will hold a lecture focusing on his highly-acclaimed new book, Japanese Garden Notes: Seeing through a Designer's Eyes. Keane will discuss the intricate and often overlooked details and nuances of the Japanese Garden. The International Japanese Garden Training Center, the Asian Art Council of the Portland Art Museum, and the Oregon East Asia Network of the University of Oregon Center for Asian and Pacific Studies will co-present this event. This lecture is under the support of the Center for Global Partnership Grassroots Program.
