Deliberate Board Recruitment Pays Dividends

There are so many lessons about board governance to be learned from this noted philosopher.
Embrace diversity - Look beyond the obvious diversity of race, gender, age, and geography. One person who represents a specific constituency does not always represent the entire group. Seek out people with different viewpoints. Consider whether you should have the recipients of your services on your board. Diversity can result in conflict, but an open, honest, respectful dialogue usually results in better decisions.
Use minds well - Engage your board members from the start with a consistent, planned orientation and committee involvement. Make sure your board members have the right skill sets to contribute effectively. An active committee volunteer who works hard on implementing activities will not necessarily make a good board member.
Follow the right path - The most effective nonprofit boards are ones which take a slow, deliberate process to recruit, cultivate, orient, and engage new board members. Rather than looking for "warm bodies" to fill board positions, create a pathway to board membership.

The Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network is pleased to welcome two new staff members!
James Cramer, Northern Regional Director
James brings more than 13 years of nonprofit experience to the role of Northern Regional Director. Most of his professional career has been spent working with Boys & Girls Clubs in a variety of roles, most recently as Associate Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Business Development. He also served as a Program Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Athletic Director. James has a rich understanding of nonprofit management, particularly related to board development, community engagement, fundraising, and operations. He is passionate about engaging and empowering other nonprofit organizations, employees, and volunteers to maximize their impact in the communities they serve. He firmly believes that every single person, from volunteers to the CEO, plays a vital role in order to achieve this goal.

James has spent his life in Northern Indiana, born in Bremen and residing in St. Joseph County. He received his BA in Psychology from Bethel College. He is a Rotarian and actively involved in his local church. James and his wife, Alicia, reside in Granger with their daughter and two dogs.
James replaces Keith Sarber, who returned to his previous role as Community Impact Director at the United Way of Elkhart County.
John Ferguson, Outreach Manager
John joins our team as INRN Outreach Manager, bringing a wealth of experience as a national officer and board member for his Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, serving in a multitude of ways including governance, engagement, fraternal education, strategic planning, facilitation, thought leadership, and hazing prevention. He has served on multiple nonprofit boards over the past 15 years and loves helping nonprofits tackle issues strategically in new and exciting ways.
He recently completed his BA in Philanthropic Studies from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (LFSOP) at Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis, graduating with highest distinction. He was named LFSOP's 2016 Chancellor's Scholar for his exemplary academic performance and extensive community involvement, including advocacy on behalf of the student population at IUPUI and grassroots community organizing around peacebuilding and alleviating child hunger in Indianapolis's poverty-stricken areas. John also worked as an intern with The Patachou Foundation helping lay the groundwork for expanding community service and increasing their overall impact. Prior to his academic endeavors, John was in hospitality management specializing in training new and existing team members to improve performance.
Training is his biggest passion (aside from live music and the Chicago Cubs) and he is excited to join INRN and work hard to improve the skills and capacity of philanthropy in Indiana.

The phrase "Strategic Planning" strikes fear in the hearts of nonprofit boards and staff members alike. Even if you have successfully developed a plan, how often is it actually implemented? Building a Strong Board and the Board's Role in Fundraising
Is simply having a board that can function a pipe dream? In this session, learn the top governance mistakes, how to avoid them, and what to do to correct them. Telling Your Story
During this workshop, learn how to use the limited time and resources you do have to get to the heart of the matter when talking to others, including funders, about the work of your agency.
- Use the logic model to frame your organization's core narrative
- Identify those individuals and groups likely to help support the work of your organization
- Develop a broad "case statement" tailored to specific audiences-potential donors and funders

Generational Giving
There is a great generational shift occurring in the US affecting jobs, families, and philanthropy. Today, there are five generations of donors. How do you cater to all of their unique wants and needs?
Organizations find it difficult to find ways to approach each generation of donors; they either apply one-size-fits-all tactics or only focus on one or two generations. Despite what you may have heard, donors from all generations have many things in common.
There are no silver bullets, but in this session you will learn:

- The giving approaches common to all generations of donors.

Western Region
The Douglas W. Eberle Not-for-Profit Board Governance Series
This series, named after the late Douglas W. Eberle, is especially designed for the volunteer leaders on nonprofit boards.
The series is open to any Indiana nonprofit, though preference is given to Tippecanoe and surrounding counties, and limited to 75 attendees per session.

Public Image and Public Policy: Advocating for Your Mission
What happens on the political scene affects every nonprofit. Yet, many nonprofits misinterpret lobbying restrictions or simply don't know where to begin advocating. Understanding Nonprofit Financials
This workshop creates a safe place to learn about nonprofit financials. Budgets, balance sheets, cash flow statements, restricted vs. unrestricted funds, and accrual vs. cash accounting will be explained in lay terms. Our presenter has spent extensive time providing controllership services for nonprofits.
