A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
The evening of July 31st begins Tisha B'Av. It is a sad holiday commemorating the destruction of both Temples as well several other horrific events in the history of our people. The Rabbis determined that the Temple was destroyed and we were exiled from the Promised Land, in part, due to the "Baseless hatred" that our ancestors expressed toward one another. The Torah attempts to teach us how to avert our, all too often, natural human predilection toward harming each other. One way we combat this is to do Gemilut Chasidim (Deeds of Loving Kindness). Indeed, God expresses His goal for the Jewish people at Leviticus 19 wherein God advises Moses to tell the Israelites that "You will be Holy for I, your God, am Holy". "Holiness" takes many forms, but the Torah proceeds to give us examples of how each of us can be holy.
Among other things, the Israelites are told to leave gleanings of the harvest, and fallen fruit, in the vineyard and orchard, for the poor. They are told to be righteous; they are admonished not to stand aside while a neighbor's blood is shed; they are told to "love your neighbor as yourself". In short, the Israelites are told to be active participants in the art of Tzedakah; the art of being just and compassionate. The Torah also tells us why we need to do these things. At Deuteronomy 15:11 we are told that despite our best efforts, "there will never cease to be needy people in your land, which is why [God commands] you to open your hands to the poor and needy".
According to Anita Diamant, in her book Living a Jewish Life , today Gemilut Chasadim takes many forms. These include: feeding the hungry, helping people find jobs, visiting the elderly, teaching people to read, providing shelter for the homeless, saving animals from suffering, planting trees, lifting the spirits of the depressed, caring for orphans, and perpetuating the memory of someone who has died (Page 75). Dr. Ron Wolfson refers to this list, and tasks similar to it, as "God's To-Do List" in his book of the same title.
In his book, Dr. Wolfson reminds us that "God made human beings in the image of God, male and female, God created them"(Genesis 1:27). He further poses that God did this so that we could partner with God. And what is the main purpose of this holy partnership? To repair the world and to make it a better place. The Rabbis called this "Tikkun Olam".
But, how do we make the world a better place? It seems such a huge task. The answer to this question is that we repair the world "one Mitzvah at a time". By performing Mitzvot, we are doing "Kiddush HaShem", "Sanctifying God's name". Since we are created in God's image, each time we sanctify God's name, we sanctify our selves, our families, our communities, and our tradition.
The Rabbis gave us one additional good piece of advice on the issue of performing Mitzvot. At Pirkei Avot 2:15-16 we are told that, "It is not up to you to finish the work, yet you are not free to avoid it". These are powerful words indeed; for even though they place an obligation upon each of us to partner with God in the work of Tikkun Olam, the task is housed within in a manageable model.
Our Tisha B'Av service will begin at 8:00 pm on Monday evening, July 31st. We will light individual candles and chant the Book of Lamentations, in a combination of Hebrew and English, while sitting in a subdued fashion. This service is charged with meaning and emotion. If you have not joined us before, please do so this year. May our Shabbat be full of peace, and may our Tisha B'Av observance hasten the coming of a time of harmony and peace in our world.

Sheri Horowitz Jay led the WOMEN'S ROSH CHODESH last Sunday morning with the usual women's candle ceremony which brought our maternal and grandmother ancestors into the room. Debbie Rabner taught us how to make jeweled wire head coverings and we had a lesson in reasons for covering our heads with Susan Werk. We closed with a circle and songs for peace. Wonderful bonding time for sisters at the JCC of LBI.
Sisterhood Co-President Jody Brusilow and Jay Friedland welcomed everyone to the Sisterhood Hoedown
Thursday evening. Everyone had fun square dancing. The social hall was decorated like a barn and the grub was served on pie plates. Do-si-do. Thank you to Jody for making all the arrangements.

The Ethical Life: Jewish Values in an Age of Choice This course will focus on the general Ethics of our tradition and how that tradition can be applied to issues that have risen historically and today. This class runs for ten weeks. Each class is stand alone, so there is no need to come to all of them. There will be a suggested donation of $5 per class or $40 if you plan on attending all ten classes.

BOOK DISCUSSION: "The Paris Architect" by Charles Belfoure
Synopsis:
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien  Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces-behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe-detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails horribly and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Ben Goldberg is a rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he is also earning an MA in Midrash, and will be ordained in 2018. Raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, Ben graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in History and Jewish Studies.

Tisha B'Av (the Ninth of Av) is an annual fast day named for the ninth day (Tisha) of the month of Av in the Hebrew calendar. The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date.

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
