Vibrant Swing! Swing! Swing! Review Among Stage Door's Best!

"Swing music has its roots in Jazz, beginning in New Orleans and Kansas City then eventually moving its way across the nation."  says  Kevin Black, creator of the recent and hugely popular Stage Door hit production of The Soul of Motor City.  "Once it reached New York City, the phenomenon quickly became the pop music of its day. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller took the jazz infused sounds of George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong and invented a genre that featured a strong drum and bass line, creating that unmistakable rhythm that lead to the high energy dance styles of the jitterbug and the jive.

" Swing! Swing! Swing! pays tribute to these Jazz and Swing classics, told through various thematic groupings of songs and artists," Black explains. "That Big Band sound, normally created by a 20 plus piece swing band, will be re-imagined by utilizing live piano, bass and drums, while incorporating the cast as the brass section through rhythmic vocals and harmonized scatting.

Maria Irene Forne's 1983 play Mud is a work of brutal honesty, savage humor, and surprising beauty.  Set on a ramshackle farm in rural America, Mud takes us into the lives of Mae and Lloyd, two severely destitute twenty-something orphans - their situation calls to mind the Ewell family in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, only with no patriarch to steer them.  Mae and Lloyd are literally and figuratively stuck in the proverbial mud. Desperate to be clean and free of her filthy way of life, Mae seeks out an education and the aid of neighbor and 3rd grade scholar, Henry, but like so many people living in the underclass of America, circumstances overwhelm the fate of her and her mates.

Hailed as the 'Mother of Off-Off Broadway', Maria Irene Fornes is one of the greatest - and until recently, grossly under-acknowledged-stage innovators of our time.  Tony Kushner counts her among the five women who shaped his theater work and considers the Fornes oeuvre "one of American dramas most important achievements."

A spare and poignant examination of poverty, illiteracy, sexuality, and the will to survive, Mud is a must see work of art.

Set in 15th century Paris, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo.  It tells the love story of the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda, the scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and the dashing Captain Phoebus. While this show is based on the animated Disney film and includes many of the same songs, the plot and themes follow more closely to the original and significantly darker novel.

Composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Aladdin) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) collaborated with book writer Peter Parnell, to create a lushly scored, powerful rendition of the timeless tale of love, acceptance and what it means to be a hero.
