Worship Service  -  10:00am
"The Courage To Be Whole"
There is a courageous beauty in LGBTQ people's struggle to live into their whole selves. Indeed this struggle to step into our own wholeness is one we all share. The Rainbow Alliance will share inspiration, stories, even a playbook for each of us to draw from.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade will begin in the sanctuary, then go downstairs to room 5 for activities. Childcare for infants, toddlers and preschoolers will be available from 9:30-11:30am.

Join us to stand in support of Black Lives Matter
11:10pm-11:30am
You are invited to stand on Ridge Avenue between 11:10am and 11:30am to support the Black Lives Matter movement.  Signs and buttons are available for purchase at the back of the sanctuary. Signs and song lyrics will be provided for use.  Sponsored by the REAL team.

The Chris Isely Cancer Support Group -  9:00am
The group is open to anyone facing cancer, either personally or through a family member or friend. This lay-led group is a safe place for sharing and hope. Interested participants are encouraged to drop in any time. Questions? Contact Renee Hoff
The members of the search committee charged with finding a Director of Lifespan Religious Education are pleased to announce that the position has been filled by Dr. Mary Shelden. The interim position is for a two-year period. Mary brings to UCE a strong background in teaching, leadership, mindfulness, and music. She has relocated to Evanston from Virginia where she was a lay leader at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Glenn Allen, Virginia, and a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University. The search committee was particularly impressed with Mary's passion for social justice, worship arts, lifelong learning, and artistic expression, as demonstrated in her work, teaching, and UU service. We are also excited about her background in curriculum development and teaching experience with adults. We are thrilled to welcome her to UCE!
Please sign up to help with the soup kitchen Monday, August 14. We will prepare and distribute sack lunches at Second Baptist Church (1717 Benson Street - next to the Evanston Athletic Club). We need people to donate supplies as well as to make sandwiches. Click here to sign up. If you have any questions, please contact Winnie Stevenson.
In honor of the second anniversary of Chris Isely's death, the Cancer Support Group is sponsoring a gathering to remember loved ones we have lost. Rev. Bret will lead a brief ceremony in room 2, before walking together to the rain garden. Anyone who wishes to honor the memory of a loved one is welcome to attend.
Rainbow Alliance announces the addition of 27 new titles to the UCE Transgender Lending Library. The additions span all age groups from pre-school through adult. These books range from fiction to anthologies, sociology resources, and one graphic novel.

Here are a few of the informative and inspiring books  we've added.
  • Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress by Christine Baldacchino
  • George by Alex Gino
  • Beyond Magenta by Kuklin
  • Outside the XY, Morgan Mann Willis, editor
  • Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt
Click here for more information on these titles.

The Transgender Lending Library book cart is outside Room 3. Browse through the books. You're sure to find something you'll want to read.
Remember that there is a directory of members that includes photos on our website. This is a password protected document. Contact the office if you don't know the password. If you would like to add your photo to the directory, or update your photo, please send  a photo to Carli Magel, or let her know you'd like your picture taken on Sunday morning.
Fake news?  Fake science?  Why is there so much confusion about important issues like climate change?  Please join the Green Team and Citizens' Climate Lobby to watch the documentary Merchants of Doubt. Inspired by historians Naomi Oreskes's and Erik Conway's acclaimed book, this documentary looks at the charismatic pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities, but aim to spread confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from tobacco to toxic chemicals to climate change.  A brief presentation about opportunities for action on climate change with Citizens' Climate Lobby will follow the film. Bring a snack to share if you can.  Questions, contact Heather Brown  or Dale Griffin
It's your last chance to nominate a nonprofit for the Shared Plate program for the coming year. All nominations are due this Monday, July 31!

At the August meeting of the Social Justice Council, charitable 501c(3) organizations with which our members have a relationship and that align with our UU values will be chosen from the nominees. Please submit a Nomination Form to Jeanne Kerl  by July 31. The form must be submitted electronically as we have to make packets of the nomination forms for the Social Justice Council's consideration. You do not have to make a PDF document. The form is in Word and can be easily completed and attached to an email. Please be aware that there are additional responsibilities for nominees this year. They are outlined on the Nomination Form. If you have questions, please contact Jeanne Kerl
If you consider yourself a Baby Boomer, come join us at 8700 Major, Morton Grove  to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. We'll provide turkey burgers and veggie burgers (let Amy know if you need gluten free) - you bring a side dish to share and BYOB!  We'll have music from the 50's, 60's, 70's around the backyard fire pit!  (If weather doesn't cooperate we'll be indoors.)  Please RSVP to  Amy Grabowski .
Whatever team you are on, whether you've greeted, handed out hymnals, brought bagels or haven't participated in our hospitality program yet, you are welcome and encouraged to join in a fun gathering to get to know other team members, share some light refreshments and snacks and learn about how we can create an even more inclusive community. Bring your questions, your open hearts and your best practices for welcoming. Please let Rev. Eileen Wiviott know if you plan to attend - [email protected].
The next GenX Gathering will be at the home of Jenny Walsh and Glen Blicharz - 16 Martha Lane in Evanston on Saturday, August 26, 4-6pm. If you are in your 30's - 50's, with kids or without, join us for a casual gathering, with light refreshments (bring a healthy snack to share if you can) and meaningful conversation. We will have childcare on site to engage the children while the adults talk. Click here to RSVP.
You are invited to nominate books for next year's UCE non-fiction book group's monthly discussions. They start in September and run through June 2018.

Send your ideas to Jackie Seaman or come in person to help us to select a well rounded reading list. We try to coordinate our titles with events, programs, passions present in the congregation.

We need your ideas and your knowledge about what is relevant to you and the work you are doing or want to do and the topics you find compelling now. We read the whole range from biographies to philosophy to history to current events.  Bring the book you are nominating with you if possible.

Every Other Thursday, 5:30pm

Next meeting - August 10

If your relationship with food tends to be complicated and you could use a bit of support on your journey to health and well-being, consider joining us. We discuss various readings and find ways to connect with one another and restore our health and our spirits. All are welcome. We meet at UCE on alternate Thursdays. Talk to Peggy Boccard or Noel Yovovich for more info.
Sing Thing will not meet in July

Instead a picnic/party is planned for Wednesday, August 23, in Room 3 at the UCE (Not August 30, our usual date).

Look for a special announcement about this event as we get closer to the date.
Yoga at UCE

Join us every Sunday at 9:00am and every Wednesday at 9:30am.

Yoga at UCE is designed to reduce stress, bring relaxation, increase range of motion, and find balance - restorative yoga. If you never have done yoga before, this is your opportunity. Drop in, wear comfortable clothing for stretching, and try it. Yoga is learned by doing. Community yoga mats provided if needed.

UCE Facebook Groups
Did you know that, in addition to the UCE Facebook Page, there are two UCE groups that members can join - the UCE Member to Member Group and the UCE Social Action Group?

These are closed groups that allow members to post directly to each other. If you have an event you want members to know about, or have a cause you hope to bring attention to, in addition to the newsletter and order of service, you can post to the Facebook Group. Click the links above or search for the groups by name when you are on Facebook and ask to join.
