Ongoing Events and Entertainment
Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10am-2pm, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Small Business Center: The Basics of Selling on eBay
A great seminar for the 'beginner' or the entrepreneur wanting to make eBay a primary business tool
Part 2, Oct. 13, 6-9 pm
For individuals having knowledge/experience of selling on eBay who want to establish a continual retail presence on eBay. Topics: Start and growing an eBay business, finding merchandise to sell, creating professional listings, marketing your business, managing listings, resolving issues, and protecting your eBay business. 
Part 3, Oct. 20, 6-9 pm : The last of the series will teach you how to market your eBay store more effectively with email newsletters, traffic reports, and the markdown manager sales tool. You will learn tips on customizing your store and SEO.

Weekly Rotary Program

The Club meets every  Thursday at 7 am  in the 
Alleghany Memorial Hospital Solarium for a buffet breakfast and program. Visitors are welcome.

Pumpkin Carving Contest
Trojan Patio will have a Pumpkin Carving Contest on Fri. and Sat., Oct. 21-22, from 7 am until 7 pm.

Alleghany Farmers Market
Season Ends on October 29
Oct. 22  and Oct. 29
Vendors will have fresh vegetables, pastured meats and cheese, gourmet baked goods, artisan crafts and more. Open on Saturdays from 9 am until 12 pm. For more information call 336-372-5473.

5K Run for Gracie, October 22
The 9th Annual Run for Gracie will be held at Piney Creek School on Saturday, Oct. 22, in memory of Gracie Williams. There also is a one-mile run for kids 12 and under. Runners and walkers are encouraged to come and participate. The one-mile run starts at 9 am and the 5K run starts at 10 am. 100 Mile Challenge
Need to add a few miles to your log? Join a State Ranger at the Hwy. 221 Access Visitor Center of New River State Park for a 2.4 mile hike on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 pm. We will enjoy the fall weather and talk about the woods getting ready for winter. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle. 336-982-2587.


Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disabilities Workshop
This FREE workshop is presented by Vickie and Richard Horodyskl, who are trained and certified to provide training on FASD in Alaska and North Carolina. This workshop will be on Tuesday, October 25, from 2-4 pm for Service Providers (snack provided) and from 6-8 pm for Community (light meal provided) at Wilkes Community College, Rooms 204 and 206 in Sparta, NC. Alleghany Jubilee Happenings!
Join us for the  Hillbilly Hoedown  with  Rise and Shine Band  every Tuesday night. Admission $5 on Tuesday, $6 on Saturday, age 12 and under free.   Hours are 7-10 pm with all ages welcome, unless otherwise noted.

Little Free Library Community Challenge

The Alleghany County Library will hold a 'Free Little Library Community Challenge' during October as our way of celebrating Fire Safety Month. These little free libraries have been built by local volunteers and are now on display at the library. Votes will be taken through Wednesday, October 26. The first and second place vote winners will win an award for one of our community fire departments and donations will be accepted during the month for our local fire departments. A reception will be held on Thursday, October 27, at 
5 pm at the library and winning fire departments will be announced. 336-372-5573.

Skybest Third Annual Food Drive

Skyline Telephone is holding the 3rd Annual Breakfast Food Drive through Oct. 31, collecting non-perishable breakfast foods for regional food pantries, including our own Solid Rock Food Closet. Pick up your "Rise and Shine to Fight Hunger" tote bag at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. 336-372-5473.
Annual Trunk n Treat
Celebrate Halloween at Trunk n Treat in Crouse Park, on Monday, Oct. 31, from 5-6:30 pm. Decorate your vehicle for young ones to get treats from your trunk, under your hatch or pickup bed. Costume contest at 6 pm. Prizes for best costume and best vehicle decoration. Open to any and all. The Alleghany Rotary Club is working at the Alleghany Senior Center to provide a Pancake Breakfast on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 7:00 to 9:00 am. All proceeds benefit the Council on Aging. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any Rotarian and at Becca's Coffee Shop, the Alleghany County Library, and the Chamber of Commerce office. Eat in or take out. Within ten miles, we deliver! (Call the Senior Center at 336-372-4640 to order.) Order for your entire office and make it a fun event. Breakfast includes pancakes (buttermilk, blueberry, or pumpkin spice), sausage, and juice, coffee, or milk. First Responders come as our guests.  336-372-5473
