AMENDED NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING
Pursuant of Article IV, Section 1, of the Bylaws notice is hereby given that the
Annual Meeting of the Members of St. Brendan the Navigator shall be held on Sunday,
July 30, 2017, at 11:15 a.m. to conduct the following business:
1. Fr. Dufresne to lead a conversation toward renewal (11:15-12:00).
2. To elect a Senior Warden.
3. To elect a Junior Warden.
4. To elect a Clerk.
5. To elect a Treasurer.
6. To elect one member of the Vestry to serve a three year term.
7. To elect other vacancies in the Vestry as may arise.
8. To elect delegates to the Diocesan Convention.

Parish Renewal Process
(Annual Meeting Agenda Item #1)
Dear Members of St. Brendan's,
Your Vestry has asked me to work with you and with them as Consulting Priest to consider your views on where our parish has been, where it is now, and where we might be headed in the year ahead. The Vestry has decided to set aside 45 minutes at the beginning of the annual meeting, (11:15 a.m. - Noon), on Sunday, July 30 for us to consider the following questions:
1. Where do you think we have been as a congregation?
2. Where do you think we are now?
3. What do you hope St. Brendan's would be like in one to three years?
4. What are some strengths as a congregation St. Brendan's could build on in the year ahead?
5. What important issues should we address in the coming year as part of
a plan for parish renewal?
After the meeting, I will compile your responses and add them to those I've already received from the Vestry and will present them as a collection of "Findings" at a specially called congregation meeting to take place after worship on Sunday, August 13.
At that meeting, we will review those Findings, which will include parish strengths and parish issues that need to be addressed as we move forward. I will then, with the Vestry's approval, present a number of proposed goals designed to address those needs in the form of a "Parish Renewal Plan." If you as a congregation decide to adopt the plan, it will become the parish's "marching orders" for the coming year, focusing our common efforts toward accomplishing clear and measurable goals for the sake of renewal.
The Vestry and I look forward to your important participation in this
process for the the future of St. Brendan's.

Seminar on Finding Joy Continues:
Edward Dufresne+ will lead and continue the discussion on the topic, "Finding Joy"
at 9am this Sunday, July 30th
- prior to the 10am worship service. To prepare for this second session, "
Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, and Humor", p
lease read pages 67-80, 193-202, and pages 215-228.
The main text for discussion is
The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being
One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
The third discussion will be held
August 13th, and the fourth and final session will be on September 10th, both following the 10am worship service.

WindowDressers is a non-profit Maine-based organization that has produced thousands of frames since 2012, with the sale and assembly of the windows done by local volunteers working in a Community Build. Appointments are made for trained volunteers to visit homes and measure a customer's window openings at an agreed upon time as soon an order has been placed.
The Deer Isle orders need to be placed and measured by the beginning of August.

Keeping Hope Alive: Despite 50 Years of Occupation
An Evening with George Rishmawi, Christian Palestinian activist
Monday, August 7, 7 p.m., at the Blue Hill Public Library
Member of a Palestinian family long engaged in non-violent resistance to Israeli occupation, George Rishmawi directs both the Siraj Center for Holy Land Studies and Masar Ibrahim, a program which brings people from all faiths and nations to walk the Abraham Path to learn Abrahamic values and traditions. Co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and active in many local and international organizations, George is committed to justice for Palestine and works to build a sense of hope and purpose for
the future in the midst of ongoing oppression.

Spiritual Encounters at Life's End
"Spiritual Encounters at Life's End" - a talk by author Chaplain Joan Maxwell - will draw on
her work as a palliative care hospital chaplain as described in her recently published memoir Soul Support. The talk will include true (anonymized) stories of dying patients' spiritual experiences and some information about ways to support dying loved ones.
The talk will be held Thursday, August 17th at 5pm at St. Brendan's, free of charge (offerings will be accepted).
Copies of the book are available on Amazon and will also be available in August at
the Periwinkle in Deer Isle and Blue Hill Books.

Scripture Notes for Eighth Sunday After Pentecost
As we did last Sunday, today we hear parables of Jesus concerning God's Kingdom. The Kingdom is characterized as hidden, yet being revealed; as small now but destined to grow large; as so precious that those who discover it will give all in order to attain it; as open to
all who will accept it.
As we continue the story of our forebears, Jacob, living with his uncle Laban, asks for the hand of Rachel, whom he loves. Laban tricks him (trickery ran in the family, perhaps) and marries him to his older daughter, Leah. After a time, however, Jacob is allowed to marry Rachel, as well. From these two women came the twelve sons of Jacob and the twelve
tribes of Israel.
Our continued reading of the Epistle to the Romans is leading to Paul's great outburst of praise and assurance of the certainty of God's love for us. Here Paul is certain that even
our weakest and most elementary striving towards God is proof that God is leading us and has destined us for glory.
The Church is not the Kingdom of God. It is, in the words of Alexander Schmemann, the
world in the process of becoming the Kingdom. When we gather to celebrate, our
movement toward the Kingdom is revealed. We are reconstituted as the Church and we discover ourselves growing toward the Kingdom.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Sidney, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Barbara Wright, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the congregations of St. John Baptist, Thomaston and Christ Church, Gardiner.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
Pennsylvania - (III, The Episcopal Church), Pittsburgh - (III, The Episcopal Church)
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for Church of Jesus Christ, Restoration Branch, Sunset.
