From Mrs. Rowley
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the St. Lucy Food Drive. Last Sunday St. Ambrose School donated twenty-one bags of food! Think of how many families that will be fed! Thanks to Mrs. Clare Stalnaker for coordinating this so successfully. We are looking forward to the ongoing service projects in cooperation with other parish ministries.
On Friday, October 28 we will have our second annual "Trunk or Treat" event in the school parking lot. This was such a fun event last year! Decorated cars should be in the school parking lot at 6pm, in preparation for our "treaters" at 6:30pm. Please plan to join us! Also,
We will have our Pumpkin Fun Run coming up on November 4. Our Three Kings Store will open in December (exact dates to follow), but we are collecting items for that immediately. More information on these fun events is below.
Our first field trips of the year are this week. 4
th
and 5
th
grades went to the National Zoo today, and 6

Asthma is a common lung condition in children and teens. It causes breathing problems, with symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Anyone can have asthma, even babies, and the tendency to develop it often runs in families.
Asthma affects the bronchial tubes, or airways. When someone breathes normally, air goes in through the nose or mouth and then into the trachea (windpipe), through the bronchial tubes, into the lungs, and finally back out again.

Three Kings Gift Shop Donations
Please consider helping us continue a great St. Ambrose School tradition-The Three Kings Gift Shop! The Three Kings Shop tradition is a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students. We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by our community that we sell for $1 or $2. All proceeds go directly to the school. The kids love it because they get to do their own shopping for their families with the help of our volunteer elves.
We are gladly accepting donations to stock our store! Please take a look through your closets, drawers, attics, and garages and see if you have items in VERY GOOD condition to donate to our shop. We could use gifts for moms, dads, children, teenagers, and grandparents. Things like jewelry, toys, games, stuffed animals, ties, gadgets, mugs, books, religious items, knick-knacks, and any item you might want to receive or give as a gift. No large gifts as the children must be able to carry the items home. We also need gift wrapping supplies, gift boxes, jewelry boxes, tape, and sturdy shopping bags. All donated items can be dropped off at the school office before December 13th. We appreciate your support! For questions please contact Maryellen DeWolfe at [email protected].

In STEM Club last week, we started with Dr. Singhal giving us a short chemistry lesson about solutions. We made our own bubble solution and learned that we can use water as the solvent and glycerin and dish soap as the solutes. Dr. Singhal demonstrated and then the kids broke into 5 teams and gave it a try. They had so much fun; I was surprised by how much the older kids enjoyed it! It was a great exercise even for our younger students, who may not grasp the chemistry, but had the chance to measure the solutes, mix and of course test their solutions!
Our kindergarten and 1
st
grade STEM Club members then went to work on a structural engineering project. We read the book, "The Three Pigs" by David Wiesner. This Caldecott Medal-winning book is an awesome variation of the three little pigs where the pigs aren't eaten by the wolf, but are "blown" right out of the story. The book is pure imagination: the pigs hitch a ride on a paper airplane, meet the cat from "Hey Diddle Diddle", befriend a dragon, and in the end everyone eats soup! The kids LOVED it.
After the reading, the students then had the opportunity to build their pig house out of the materials available (cardboard, paper towel rolls, craft sticks, duct tape, masking tape, etc). They did great work!
Next week we are going to apply a wind load to the houses and see how they do!
The 2
nd
- 7
th
grade students had their first preparatory engineering challenge - index card towers. The 2
nd
-4
th
grade were given the following engineering criteria: to build a tower at least 10 inches high and hold a small stuffed animal. The 5
th
-7
th
grade had a more complex task with the following engineering criteria: the tower must be 2 feet high, support a block (load) on top and hold the load for 10 seconds. Each group was given 1 pack of index cards, scissors and masking tape.
There was some wonderful creative thinking, teamwork and communication in this session. It was also an opportunity for the STEM Club to introduce the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to the students. We covered the first steps in the EDP: Ask, Imagine, Plan and Create. Next week we will cover the last step Improve; we will discuss what worked, what didn't and steps we can take to re-engineer our structures so that the criteria are met within the constraints of our materials.
