Welcome to our monthly newsletter, where we bring you human interest stories, current events and information on Belize! Mostly, our purpose is to share all the positive and beautiful things about Belize and its people.
The Consulate of Belize in Florida continues to offer Belizean Passports and Emergency Travel Documents. We are also issuing Identification Cards, facilitating many Belizeans living in Florida with the opportunity to hold an official ID from Belize. Acceptance of these cards at U.S. offices and other institutions, however, depends on their discretion.

H.E. Francisco Daniel Gutierez Presents Letters of Credence to the President of the United States of America
Washington, D.C. July 21st, 2017. H.E. Francisco Daniel Gutierez presented his Letters of Credence to the President of the United States of America at the White House, thus making him the tenth Ambassador of Belize to the United States of America.
In his remarks to President Trump, Ambassador Gutierez expressed heartfelt greetings from the Prime Minister the Right Honorable Dean Oliver Barrow and the Belizean people. He underscored the friendly, and long-standing bilateral relations existing between both countries.
Ambassador Gutierez applauded the role of the United States in the preservation of peace and the respect for Belize's borders given the unfounded Guatemalan claim, and President Trump in his remarks underscored that a secure and stable Central America contributes to the safety and prosperity of the United States. Ambassador Gutierez also mentioned the loss of correspondent banking and dangers posed therein.
The Ambassador reiterated that one of the centrepieces of the U.S.-Belize relationship is economic prosperity for both our nations. He placed emphasis on our common goal in the fight against the threat of transnational organized crime, and Belize's commitment to do its part to prevent the spread of this scourge.
Ambassador Gutierez accentuated Belize's desire for a continued and broad ranging partnership with the United States - a partnership based on a common foundation of democracy, the free market and the aspiration of all our citizens for a better way of life.
Ambassador Gutierez takes over from H.E. Patrick Andrews, who is now the new Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize.

ew Diaspora of Belize Website Launched By The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
On Friday, June 16th, the Government Press Office revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched its new website, www.diasporaofbelize.org. Not only will this website serve as an information hub for Belizeans living abroad, but it will allow them to get more involved with what's happening on the mainland. Established and administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Belizean Diaspora Program was approved by the Government of Belize in September 2009. As the major focus of this program was for the registration of Belizeans living abroad, a registration drive was also launched in August 2010 to add members to the Belizean Diaspora Medical Brigade, along with the Belizean Diaspora Law Enforcement and Defense Brigade. According to Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, Belizeans abroad have a tremendous role to play in the country's development. "A lot of them send back remittances, and lot of them support their families. They acquire a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill in the new professions and occupations they engage in abroad; and they can use that education and skill to enhance and improve the situation back here at home, especially now with the ease of telecommunication and the ease of travel. We can have the benefit of their expertise and knowledge instantaneously, and that we need desperately if we are to develop our society," said Elrington. Consul General, His Excellency Herman Longsworth, stated that he is confident that this new medium will make Belizeans stay more connected and actively aware of current situations occurring throughout the country. In addition to providing updated information, the website also includes special features that will assist in a mapping exercise of the Belizean diaspora.

"The Ministry of Defence wishes to inform the public that the Belize Defence Force Air Wing (BDF AW) carried out its first Rescue Mission using the UH1H, on July 8th, 2017. The mission was carried out in the village of San Benito Poite in the Toledo District, where three children, ages 10, 14 and 16 years old, were rescued. The three children went on a fishing expedition and were stranded on the far bank of the Poite River that had crested above normal due to a flash flood. As a result, the Hammock Bridge was damaged making it unusable and the main bridge was submerged making it impassable."

BELIZE COAST GUARD GRADUATES WITH TOP HONORS FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVAL WAR COLLEGE
"Lieutenant Gregory Soberanis of the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) graduated from the United States Naval War College on the 16th June, 2017, after successfully completing the Naval Staff Course in Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A. Soberanis, who is the first Belizean to attend the one-year version of the course, was elected class president during his time at the Naval Staff College and won th
e International Leadership Award for being the most outstanding overseas student.
The Naval War College is a one-year resident program that graduates about 600 resident students and about 1,000 distance learning students. Its primary mission is to educate and develop future leaders. Additional missions include combat readiness, strengthening global maritime partnerships, and contributing knowledge to shape effective decision making.
The Ministry of Defence is pleased to welcome back Lieutenant Gregory Soberanis, who is the substantive Fleet Commander for the BCG. Soberanis is also presently the Acting Vice Commander (XO) of the BCG, pending the return of Lieutenant Commander Bennett who is presently on the Advance Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom."

Recipe of the Month
Chimole (Relleno Negro or"Black Dinnah")
INGREDIENTS:
1 Whole Chicken
1 Head Garlic - Chopped fine
1 Onion - diced
1 Sweet pepper - diced
2 tomatoes - Chopped
Chicken to be submerged in water
5 or 6 all spice - Cracked seed
4 oregano leaves
4 apasote leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
3 Black Recado balls
½ red recado ball
Stuffing (Relleno Only):
2 lbs of ground pork (lean)
6 boiled eggs (separated)
2 raw eggs
1 Black Recado
2 heads of Garlic chopped fine
Salt and pepper to taste
Stuffing (Relleno only):
Brown the pork with garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Add black recado and cook for about twenty minutes. Cool then add chopped egg whites, mix the two raw eggs to hold the stuffing together and set aside for later.
Chicken: Wash Chicken with vinegar or lime, season with salt and pepper. Now stuff the chicken with the pork mixture (stuffing). Add the boiled eggs yolks in between the stuffing as you stuff the chicken. Place chicken in pot, add water to cover chicken and add the rest of the ingredients except the black recado. Dissolve black recado in a glass of water and add to the chicken. Stir and simmer for 45 minutes to an hour or until chicken is done.
Thicken soup with one tablespoon of maseca (corn flour) or flour, dissolve in half cup of water. Add slowly to soup while stirring serve with corn tortillas.
Note: you can add a whole habanero pepper to the soup if you want it spicier or to taste.
Chimole:
The recipe for Chimole is the same recipe without the pork stuffing. The chicken is instead cut up into smaller pieces, seasoned with salt and pepper to taste and browned in a small amount of oil (I prefer olive) before adding it to the water and all the rest of the ingredients plus the black recado. Serve with boiled eggs and tortilla.
