Free DataArts Workshops in Arizona  
Flagstaff | Phoenix | Tucson | Mesa
The Arizona Commission on the Arts will be hosting DataArts' (formerly Cultural Data Project/CDP) upcoming workshops in October and November throughout Arizona. These free workshops are geared toward assisting arts and culture organizations better understand and utilize data collection and reporting. Two tracks will be offered: an orientation to the DataArts platform and a hands-on session on using data reports to communicate your message.

Creative Aging Workshop  
Tuesday, November 1, 2016 | Flagstaff
Join the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Flagstaff Arts Council to learn more about Creative Aging, an exciting national movement to advance understanding of the vital relationship between creative expression and healthy aging.

Guest artist Elizabeth Johnson will provide an interactive exploration of the different approaches used across the continuum of care, and the brain/body research which shows that older adults who are engaged in the arts experience better overall health, enjoy a higher quality of life, and are more active in their communities.

AZ ArtWorker: Yadira De La Riva
AZ ArtWorker, our artist-to-artist professional development program funded by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, partnered with ASU Performance in the Borderlands, BAC, Tohono O'odham Community College, Spoken Futures and Shining Soul to bring visiting theater artist and educator Yadira Da La Riva to southern Arizona for a series of workshops and performances in October.
October 20 | Tucson 
AZ ArtWorker partnered with Spoken Futures to present a workshop with Yadira De La Riva in Tucson. Participants practiced and developed the incorporation of physical, theatrical movement to their spoken word performances. 

October 21-22 | Douglas
AZ ArtWorker hosted a workshop in Douglas with Yadira De La Riva. Participants developed short dramatic works focused on reclaiming community narratives, some of which were featured in a binational performance on October 22. 
October 27 | Sells
AZ ArtWorker partnered with Tohono O'odham Community College, Shining Soul and Red Ink Magazine to present a workshop focused on reclaiming community narratives, some of which were featured in a performance on October 27.

2016-17 Arizona Poetry Out Loud 
School Registration Deadline: Monday, October 31, 2016
Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word and theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Participating teachers receive free multimedia curriculum materials--a poetry anthology, audio guide, teachers' guide, posters and comprehensive website (www.poetryoutloud.org) all aligned to national standards--augmenting their regular poetry curriculum with poetry recitation and a classroom-level competition. School-level recitation champions compete to advance to the regional, state and then national levels.

2016 Joint Arts Education Conference Convened in Phoenix
The 2016 Joint Arts Education Conference (JAEC) was held in downtown Phoenix on Monday, October 24, 2016. Presented by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Arizona Department of Education and City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, the full-day event drew over 150 teaching artists, educators, arts administrators and arts education advocates. 

Historic Healing Arts and Military Partnership Expands 
On October 25, 2016, the National Endowment for the Arts and Department of Defence announced the expansion of their partnership into Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network. The expanded program places creative arts therapies at the core of patient-centered care at ten additional clinical sites, and increases access to therapeutic arts activities for military members, veterans and their families.

Phoenix Honors the Arts with 2016 Mayor's Arts Awards
Phoenix's annual Mayor's Arts Awards ceremony was held at the Margaret T. Hance Park Urban Plaza on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Awards were given in six categories, honoring "outstanding leaders" in the cities arts sector. 

Artist Project Grant recipient Awarded Dayton Literary Peace Prize 
Tempe writer and theater artist Susan Southard was awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for her book,  Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War. In 2008 Southard received an Artist Project Grant from the Arts Commission to work on this book.

Viola Awards presented by Flagstaff Arts Council
City of Phoenix Seeks Nominees for Poet Laureate
Deadline: November 4, 2016 
The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and Phoenix Public Library are seeking nominations for Phoenix poets to apply for the new position of poet laureate. The Phoenix poet laureate will serve a two-year term to begin and end on the first of January.  Poets laureate may not serve more than three terms. 

Flagstaff Arts Council Requests Nominations for Viola Awards
Deadline: December 6, 2016 
Presented annually by the Flagstaff Arts Council, the Viola Awards recognize excellence in the arts and sciences in Flagstaff, Arizona. You can contribute to the outcome of the 2017 Viola Awards by nominating artists, educators and leaders for their work in 2016.

NEA Big Read Grant
Application Deadline: January 26, 2017 
NEA Big Read is accepting applications from non-profit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs. Organizations selected to participate in the program receive a grant ($5,000-$20,000), access to educational and promotional materials, and online training resources.  

Call for Proposals: Pave Symposium on Entrepreneurship and the Arts
The Pave Program in Arts Entrepreneurship is now accepting proposals for individual papers, presentations or full panels on the theme of arts entrepreneurship in community settings and the role of arts entrepreneurship in creative placemaking for its fifth biannual symposium in May.

Diverse Arts Spaces Grant
Deadline: November 17, 2016 
The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) Diverse Arts Spaces Grant Program is a funding initiative for the presentation or commissioning of work by Latino artists or ensembles working in visual arts, dance, music, performance art or theater. To facilitate these partnerships, NALAC will work with organizations that are part of the Ford Foundation Diverse Arts Spaces initiative program to identify and reach out to Latino artists and ensembles. 

Dance/AZ: Shaping the Future of Arizona Dance
November 19, 2016 
Facilitated by Liz Lerman, Yvonne Montoya and National Dance Project (NDP) Advisors, this convening brings together dance professionals to envision a future for our field together. Whether you're an independent dance artist, a dance company, dance educator, organization/venue/group who presents dance, or dance supporter, come share your voice in creating an inclusive vision for dance in our state.
