Summer Imaginarium
~ This Sunday's Service ~
Rock and Roll Service! Andy Hogg, Sam Piper, Carleton Sheppard, will be leading a service called Rock of Ages. There will be no Order of Service. The service will feature rock music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. The theme is about how rock music can be part of the path toward our own spiritual development. This will be one of the most fun services of the year!

~ Ministers Musings ~
This edition of the weekly musings is a summer touch point on a few differing topics.
1. Please make plans to attend the very special Rock-n-Roll service this Sunday, this has become a beloved tradition with Beacon. I am very much looking forward to my first opportunity to attend and enjoy. Thanks to our Worship Associates Andy Hogg, Carleton Shepard and Sam Piper for creating and offering our service this week. Rock On!
2. Apology for those in the back third of Sanctuary Sunday, the hallway switch for the back wall and foyer speakers did not get flipped on, and thus many of you had a hard time hearing the full service. On behalf of set-up volunteers and me, Sorry we missed a step!
3. Adrianne Anning, our Director of Music, and I are both pleased so many of you responded with interest and enthusiasm in our new trial of creative seating in the Sanctuary. Many of you asked if all 90 chairs are still there, indeed, they are, but with moving these front side rows into new configuration, we gained the open center space. It was so very nice to have a real and true spot to invite our children and youth to come forward for time for all ages. Additionally, many of you shared with us how you liked the pulpit in the center space for visibility and accessibility. All is a work in progress, so we will continue the trial and fine tune as we proceed ahead.

It has been brought to my attention that not everyone was at the Annual Meeting
Sunday Service or the meeting itself, "I am shocked" said with great smile and good humor!!

we welcomed Adrianne as our new regular and ongoing Music Director.
Adrianne began in this new role July 1, bringing us year round music!

4. GRATITUDE - Thanks to Marcia and Bill Owen for the extended loan and use of their piano as our Sanctuary piano for many years! Beacon was gifted a piano this spring and exchanges were made last week, so we are grateful for both the Owens and our Donor this spring. 4. DRE Update - The RE Committee and I are working to begin interviews in the coming week with applicants for our open position, we have job posted on Indeed.com, Craigslist and with the Pacific Southwest Regional UUA website. We hope to have additional information to share in the coming weeks.
5. Touchstones is coming... This fall ministry and music will begin using components of a national UUA theme based ministry program Touchstones. Please be on the lookout in the coming weeks for more information about this new venture, which we utilize for the coming church year and review in the late spring.
6. Lastly for this week we are seeking some volunteers to support in a few key areas of church life - Please be in touch with Heather in the office,

, if you can help out:
a. We would like to develop a group of Sunday volunteer offering counters, need to be teams of
two for financial safety and security, a simple cash counting and filling out the cash forms. (This
is to remove this task from our Board of Trustees who serve us in numerous other ways!)
b. We are seeking an office volunteer on Tuesdays, to help with minor office matters, prepare
bank deposit and lite housekeeping (emptying the dishwasher) (This is to support better fiscal
security having two individuals when money counting is involved.)
c. Please see upcoming dates for Building and Grounds work days, if you like those more nuts
and bolts, and tool-belt kinda projects!

This time, I would like to invite any and all of you to participate. If you would like to share a hymn with the congregation, please email me and tell me the title. Be prepared to say a short introduction or why this particular hymn is important/memorable to you. (less than 2 minutes please.)

Two OUR WHOLE LIVES CLASSES

The Beacon Religious Exploration program is pleased to announce two OUR WHOLE LIVES (OWL) classes for youth this fall. OWL provides accurate, developmentally appropriate information for all ages about a range of topics, including relationships, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual health, and cultural influences of sexuality. Classes are facilitated by Beacon members who have received training and certification through the UUA. More information about OWL content is available at

It is our philosophy that parents are the primary sexuality educators for their children, and this is a way that our faith community supports parents in that effort.
Families from outside the Beacon congregation are very welcome to participate.

~ Social Justice Allies ~
A biased review of the first session of
Beacon's four-part conversations
on
Literature of the Borderlands
By any measure, last Saturday's first installment of four Saturday morning conversations focusing on Literature of the Borderlands was a solid success! We had hoped for about a dozen participants (there were 19) and we couldn't guess whether our reach would extend beyond Beacon (four people from outside our congregation joined us that morning)!
Prior to this event your SJA journalist had had no such seminar-like experience with good friend and presenter/facilitator Dr. Charles (Chuck) Tatum, University of Arizona Professor Emeritus of Spanish, so I admit I was a bit nervous about how the session might go. I was, however, delighted with Chuck's artful balancing of structure (e.g. clarification of terminology, historical context), encyclopedic knowledge of borderlands writers and their works and compassionate responses to participant questions and perceptions. By my lights he did all this in a relaxed-though-candid manner, punctuated with humor.
So what's next? On three more Saturday mornings-July 29, August 5 and August 12-we will gather again 9 - 11:00 in the sanctuary.
You are welcome to join us for one or more sessions, even if you missed the first session and whether or not you read the materials Chuck has provided for us.

) and I'll send them to you as attachments.
However, here's my limitation: I'll be away next week and out of email range, beginning Sunday, July 29. I can email the readings to you Thursday or Friday this week (July 27 or 28) or after August 5.
From comments elicited from those who did not have the reading material last week, the session was informative and interesting nonetheless. So, take a chance and give this unique opportunity a try: We welcome you!

Sunday Morning Volunteer opportunity! You've been looking for how you can help out at Beacon, here's your chance! We're seeking to build a pool of cash count volunteers to work in teams of two, for one half hour after service to count the offering and prepare cash count sheet. Tuesday Volunteer opportunity! We're seeking volunteers to prepare the weekly deposit and other simple tasks as needed. Please contact the office with your interest.

~ Art Exhibitions at Beacon for July and August

And Now For Something Different - New Art At Beacon
For July And August we are displaying the exciting work of textile artist and man about town Jamie Hasapis. The pieces in this exhibit were created using a technique called "snow-dyeing". Fabric is covered with 8" - 10" of snow and then dyes are applied. As the snow melts the dye is absorbed randomly creating color, design and texture. "I never know what the end result will be....when I open the bundles I have these incredible gifts that I get to share."
In addition to his art, Jamey is a musician, singer and actor. He is also the host of Radio Sunnyside's Community Conversation
on Monday mornings at
