Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. As we mark America's 241st birthday, let us celebrate the lasting principals that have made America the greatest country on earth: freedom, democracy, and a commitment to justice.  Wishing you and your family, a happy and safe 4th of July!

Street naming for Max E. Salvador
 

On June 9, Commissioner Diaz was honored to join Doral Mayor Juan Carlos "JC" Bermudez, Doral council members and family for the unveiling street naming for "Max E. Salvador Way" on NW 52 Street from NW 97 Avenue to NW 107 Avenue. Max was not only a dedicated business man but also a community activist, who was instrumental in shaping the City of Doral. Max passed away on March 3, 2010.
Legislation News



 
Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation to encourage the growth of STEM careers in Miami-Dade County. The legislation calls for the County administration to continuously
pursue opportunities for partnerships, programs and grants that will lead to expanding educational and career opportunities in the STEM fields for young people, including girls and young women. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
 
Commissioner Diaz co-sponsored legislation establishing paid leave for disabled military veterans for Miami-Dade County and Public Health Trust employees for treatment for military service connected disabilities. 

Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to implement stronger penalties for illegal dumping.
Commissioner Diaz hosts "Doing Business with the Military" Workshop

Commissioner Diaz welcomed attendees to "Doing Business with the Military" business development workshop on June 27 at the Miami Marriott Dadeland. The workshop allowed businesses to network with military entities in hopes of growing a partnership between our local businesses and our military to help our community. The event was sponsored by the Military Miami-Dade, a program of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. 
Commissioner Diaz attends street naming for Jose Milton

On June 16, Commissioner Diaz joined some of his colleagues for the renaming of a portion of Fontainebleau Blvd as "Jose Milton Way" honoring the late Jose Milton. Milton, a Cuban American developer was known for his charitable contributions to the community. He  passed away on July 3, 2013.

Head Start is accepting applications for the 2017-18 School Year
Head Start
is a free program that provides care and instruction for qualifying children in a classroom setting and they are now accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year.
To be eligible for this program, parents or legal guardians must provide their gross income for the past 12 months, provide a photo ID amd proof of Miami-Dade County residency. 

Be prepare for Hurricane Season
Hurricane Season is here and now is the time to stock up on hurricane supplies. Be sure to plan ahead with the help of the 2017 Hurricane Guide.
 
Consumer Protection
Have a complaint against a business? The Office of Consumer Protection enforces consumer protection laws under Miami-Dade County's Uniform Trade Standards and Deceptive Trade Practices Ordinance, as well as regulates and enforces laws relating to specific industries. The Consumer Mediation Center investigates a variety of consumer complaints, mediates disputes between consumers and businesses, and educates consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities in order to maintain a vibrant local marketplace.  On May 26, Commissioner Diaz and our military men and women paying tribute on Memorial Day weekend at the Miami-Dade County Government Cemetery to honor our fallen heroes buried here in unmarked graves.
Commissioner Diaz attends the "National Salute to America's Heroes presented by Hyundai for Memorial Day weekend on May 27 on Miami Beach.

On June 20, Commissioner Diaz presents a proclamation to our hometown veterans who fough bravely in the Korean War.

Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
