For many, summer is a time of rest and relaxation, but for our ITEP interns the work is just beginning. After months of training workshops and interviews, 129 high school interns across LAUSD, Downey and Barstow Unified have begun the process of immersing themselves in the world of work, putting into practice the new skill sets and confidence they developed through ITEP programming.
I am so proud of these young men and women, who have pursued their goals with diligence and perseverance. Being a teenager is never easy, and in the communities where ITEP works, our young people often face additional obstacles that make showing up that first day a major accomplishment.
To them, and to ITEP staff, our educators, our employers, and to the families that stand behind these young people, I say thank you for your dedication and your belief in creating a better future for our youth.

Growth Begins at The End of Your Comfort Zone
During this year's annual trip to Cal Maritime, 27 ITEP students from Phineas Banning High School's Global Safety and Security Academy not only earned their Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) certificates, but also developed essential career and life skills.
The trip's activities included training in water survival, personal safety, firefighting, and boarding a cargo ship simulator.
These experiences helped students step out of their comfort zones and learn how to come together as a team with stronger leadership skills, better communication, and essential decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Each student came away from the trip with a sense of accomplishment and stronger self-confidence.
Our deepest thanks to Metro Ports and the Nautilus Board, whose generosity has made this life-changing trip possible for these and hundreds more ITEP students over the past twelve years. We also want to thank all ITEP alums who participated as chaperones and mentors.

Welcome to the World of Work
Yes, it is that time of year again
,
and ITEP's summer internship programs are in full swing.
This year ITEP is giving 129 LAUSD, Downey Unified, and Barstow Unified students their first
taste of real-life work experience. Through the support of over 69 employers and 14
funders, our commitment to helping students acquire critical skills and career-building experiences has never been stronger. We could not be prouder of this group of young men and women as they take on the challenge of their respective internships
,
and we look forward to seeing each and every one of them at their culmination ceremonies later this summer.
In 2001, in partnership with the Port of Los Angeles, ITEP launched our very first summer internship program with 14 Phineas Banning High School, International Trade Academy students. Today, our 129 ITEP summer
i
nterns are drawn from 12 schools with pathways focused on careers ranging from international trade and logistics to health sciences and automotive repair.
Over the past sixteen years, we
have innovated our programs to meet the learning outcomes required by educators and to fill the skills gaps demanded by industry. Our work-based learning experience has also enabled us to serve as technical consultants to school districts who seek to build their own quality programs.
ITEP is grateful for our ongoing collaboration with LAUSD Linked Learning, The Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Linked Learning (AMETLL) Consortium, The LA Regional Career Pathways Project, Barstow Unified School District, and the MADE initiative at Downey Unified School District. We are especially appreciative of
our partnership with the Port of Los Angeles, our largest funder and employer of interns, currently hosting 17 students.

Washington, D.C.
Eighteen ITEP students from Phineas Banning High School's International Trade Academy joined high school students from around the country at t
he National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) in Washington, D.C.
During the conference, students interacted with distinguished national security leaders and witnessed diplomacy, intelligence, and defense operations in action. Additionally, students participated in a real-world crisis simulation and worked as a team to develop action plans.
They also
visited the U.S. Department of State, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Institute of Peace.
This transformational trip was made possible by the generosity of Pasha Stevedoring and Terminals. Thank you for providing this extraordinary opportunity to ITEP students year after year.

Mentor for a Year, Friend for Life
"People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." -

When reading Maya Angelou's words, who comes to mind? Behind every successful individual is a great mentor - the favorite teacher that inspired you, the supervisor who challenged you and helped you grow, the experienced professional who shared valuable wisdom. Mentorships come in all shapes and sizes, but the one thing they all have in common is that they often have profound, positive impacts on both mentees and mentors.
ITEP understands the importance of mentoring youth, and through our Industry Coaching Program, volunteer mentors help students dream big and prepare them to achieve postsecondary goals.
This year,
62 professionals dedicated a total of 522 hours to monthly mentoring sessions with 262 ITEP students from six schools
located throughout greater Los Angeles
.
The annual six-month program includes hands-on activities designed to help students learn how to communicate effectively, collaborate, define their goals, manage their time, create eye-catching resumes and cover letters, and more. This year, many students also had the opportunity to participate in a job shadow to discover different career paths and industries.

1400+ Students Connect with Local & International Companies
Thinking about the future and exploring endless career possibilities can be daunting for many teenagers. Career exploration events can make this process less intimidating and even exciting.
ITEP produces multiple industry expos and student summits to provide students a wide variety of career possibilities to explore. Recently, ITEP helped coordinate the 8th annual career fair at Barstow High School, hosted by the Mojave Express Logistics Academy earlier this spring.
More than 1400 students engaged with twenty-nine local and international organizations, learned about the many educational and career opportunities available, and explored a wide variety of sectors, including
mining and metals, banking, healthcare, military, law enforcement, social services, real estate, hospitality, rail transport, and more.
This event was a huge success thanks to the immense support from our dedicated volunteers, advisory board members, exhibitors, and the staff and faculty at Barstow High School.
ITEP's work in Barstow is made possible through a generous grant from the BNSF Railway Foundation, and supplemented with support from local industry leaders: Barstow Unified School District, BNSF, Brubaker-Mann, Rio Tinto, PG&E, Desert Community Bank, Barstow Community College, PACE Services, Barstow Area Chamber, Greater Hope Foundation, Midas, Ayres Hotel, Career Institute, Marine Corps Logistics Base, and the Barstow Police Department.

Students Learn about a Booming Job Sector - Alternative Energy Vehicles
Preparing students for jobs of the future and success in the new economy is an essential task that cannot be accomplished by educators alone - it requires collaboration and innovation. By partnering with industry and educators, ITEP connects high-wage, high-growth job sectors to the classroom experience.
Recently, ITEP helped students at Carson High School learn more about one of the fastest-growing, most innovative sectors of our economy: clean energy, particularly sustainable transportation.
Many of today's teenagers, Gen Z'ers, love cars and care about the environment, making alternative energy vehicles and similar concepts a great career opportunity. To raise awareness and encourage enthusiasm about this potential career field, we produced an alternative energy vehicles car show and interactive speaking sessions with industry experts.
Students were excited to find the latest alternative energy vehicles parked outside their classrooms for them to explore and hop inside for photos. Car show vehicle demonstrations
were made possible by AQMD, Daimler Mercedes-Benz, Carson Honda, Carson Toyota, Carson Nissan, Car Pros Kia Carson, Timmons of Long Beach, Republic Services, the SoCal Electric Car Club, and Kitty Adams, Executive Director at Adopt A Charger, as well as the SoCal Electric Car Club.
In addition, students spoke with four industry expert guest speakers -
Judi Masada,
Mitchell Harmatz, Richard Teebay, and
Dr. Rajit Gadh - who discussed
alternative energies and the way those energies impact the environment.
