Meet Drawmer's New Baby: MPA-90

Ivor Drawmer and his handpicked team of engineers unveiled the new Drawmer MPA-90 two-channel class D power amplifier. Its small dual monoblock design, with tabletop or rack mountable footprint, houses guts capable of delivering 90W per channel (into 4 Ohms) or 180W bridged - all with no annoying fan. Like Drawmer's MC2.1 Monitor Controller, the new MPA-90 treats audio signals with integrity: its output is lusciously transparent, revealing the beauty (and the faults!) of whatever is run through it. Also, like all Drawmer's products, the MPA-90 is built in England to last a lifetime, priced fairly at $695.

"The new Drawmer MPA-90 is the perfect partner to small passive loudspeakers like the Auratone® 5Cs or other small passives" says Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group, Drawmer's longtime US distributor.
"Many Class D amps out there are just raw Class D modules, but the MPA-90 has a Drawmer designed and built custom front end to improve its sound. The MPA-90 sounds excellent and with the bridging feature, provides a future upgrade path. The MPA-90 is really the perfect complement to the Drawmer MC1.1 or MC2.1 Preamplifiers in matching housing, but it works great with any preamp."
Switching the Drawmer MPA-90 from stereo to mono bridged is easily accomplished with the flick of a switch and use of the mono loudspeaker jack. Its inputs are either balanced XLR or unbalanced phono to cover the two universes of gear, pro versus semi-pro/consumer that may feed it. It features thermal, overload, and power-up/power-down protection and front-panel standby, fault, and clip indicator LEDs. Its rugged steel chassis and brushed aluminum cover speaks to the Drawmer MPA-90's design integrity and longevity.
The MPA-90 is now available for shipping.  PRICE: $695.00 MAP

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES

Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Aranita + Fischer at NRG Brent Fischer co-produced eight tracks for saxophonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Aaron Aranita who has been making music in a dazzling array of contexts from Boston to Japan, to Hawaii, his home. Aranita has accompanied R&B icons The Temptations and Natalie Cole; old-school entertainers Andy Williams, Boston fusion combo Birdland, and the Hawaiian PBS Big Band.
For the sessions in Los Angeles, the tracks got recorded with Fischer Big Band directed by Brent Fischer at NRG Studio A.
Guitar, percussion and few other over dubs will be added between LA and Hawaii before the tracks are mixed by Matt Brownlie and Brent Fischer in August.

The Vintage Sound Reborn
Telefunken Diamond Series

Most will agree. There's nothing like the sound of a classic vintage mic!
The studio standards : C12, 251, and U47 are on the wish list of every engineer.
Now with Telefunken Diamond series the vintage sound is reborn.  Of course,
the best way to compare mics is by hearing them. So, TransAudio Group and Telefunken are organizing dealer showroom shootouts.  Dealers who participate can use their choice of support gear and any comparable vintage microphone models they'd like to put up against the new Telefunken Elektroakustik C12, ELA M 251 and U47 mics.
"Genuine shootouts are the only way we can think of to sidestep the hype that's out there about mics and get to what actually matters: Sound Quality," says Brad Lunde of Trans Audio Group.
Sweetwater recently held shootouts between the vintage AKG C12 and the new Telefunken C12 (click to listen); between the vintage Telefunken ELA M 251 and the new Telefunken ELA M 251 (click to listen); and between the vintage Neumann U47 and the new Telefunken U47 (click to listen).
Interested dealers should contact TransAudio Group directly at 702-365-5155.

A Whole Lotta Mastering System
Bettermaker Mastering Limiter Shipping Now!

TransAudio Group, U.S. distributor of high-end professional audio recording equipment, is shipping the Bettermaker Mastering Limiter.
BML combines a pure analog signal path with a USB connection that allows it to be controlled, recalled, automated, and A/B'd from its associated plug-in (The USB connection and plug-in only control the functionality of the hardware unit, no audio passes through the USB connection or plug-in). This unit is comprised of two separate level control circuits, an infinity to 1 limiter followed by a clipper. Both are fixed threshold circuits, with the limiter threshold approximately 3dB lower than the clipper. A user adjustable ratio controls the amount of work done by the limiter versus clipper, achieved through adjustment of the limiter attack time. Additionally, this unit features variable odd- and even-harmonic coloration, locally stored user presets, and responsive, comprehensive metering that frees up your computer screen for other workflow tasks.

"You cannot look at the Bettermaker Mastering Limiter as just one tool," explains Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. "It is a whole mastering system that replaces more than a few plug-ins and analog devices: limiter, clipper, saturator, M/S matrix, and a very sophisticated metering device. Its bright touchscreen display is pleasant to look at and frees up the computer screen. "Bettermaker's plug-in control is great. Not only can users recall and automate settings, but they can easily A/B settings from the plug-in to make smart decisions. You can also store and save presets right from the front panel or within Pro Tools or other DAW's," says Lunde. "The 'color' section is our original design; we did not model it on anything that is currently on the market," said Marek Walaszek, CEO at Addicted To Music group and the lead designer of the Bet-termaker products. "The idea is to give the user the ability to add odd harmonics, even harmonics, or both to the signal. The harmonics target a user specified area of the audio spectrum, which al-lows you to, for example, add even harmonics to the highs to give them a more smooth sound and odd harmonics to the lows to give them more bite. The color section mimics a wide-Q equalizer and users can apply equalization techniques when using this capability; after finding the target area us-ers adjust the amount to color to apply. Also, the color is not a mix of saturated signal and dry signal; the harmonic content becomes part of the original dry signal."
The metering page includes input, output, and reduction meters, a VU meter, RMS metering, LUFS (Short Term, Integral, Momentary, Loudness Range, View in Time) with TruePeak metering, K-metering, a FFT analyzer, a goniometer, a correlation meter, and three points of measurement: the plug-in, the physical input of the limiter, and the physical output of the limiter. An additional page allows users to customize their metering to fit their workflow.
U.S. PRICING: $3495.00 List * $2995.00 M

ATC monitors were at NAMM earlier in January where TransAudio Group showcased the popular near- and mid-field ATC SCM25A and SCM45A monitors, as well the new passive ATC SCM12 monitor and the ATC P1 PRO stand-alone amplifier.  You can hear ATCs at some of the world's best studios: East West, the Village, and Blackbird Studios.
TransAudio Group's Subwoofer Pros Studio Subs complemented the ATC SCM25As. TransAudio Group introduces the newest  and smallest member of the ATC family: the SCM12 Pro. Using the very same "all in-house built" components as its larger siblings, the SCM12 Pro delivers ATC's famous super-detailed "ATC midrange", solid imaging, and ideal balance that have made ATC the gold standard for working professionals across all music genres and audio industries. In a twist, TransAudio Group will combine the SCM12 Pro with ATC's all new P1 Pro 150W/channel rackmount amplifier in a bundle that breaks previous price barriers for ATC. The SCM12/P1 Pro monitor/amp package will carry a bundle MAP price of US $4350. If purchased separately, the SCM12 Pro is $1,990/pair MAP, and the P1 Pro amp is $3,490 MAP.

Additionally TransAudio created a new "free-to-the-dealer" display option.  The four-sided display makes it easy to showcase recording studio accessories, such as Accusound cable, Sabra-Som shock mounts, and Pauly and Hakan pop filters. "This display makes it much easier for the dealer to present and sell higher performance accessories. WE will service the display making it easy for the dealer to add plus revenue," said Lunde.

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the
Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

Quincy Jones VS Michael Jackson Estate
A Case Of Royalties Won

A jury this week found that Michael Jackson's estate owes the celebrated Grammy-award-winning 84-year-old producer Quincy Jones $9.4 million in royalties and production fees from "Billie Jean," ''Thriller" and more of the superstar's biggest hits.  The Jackson estate had put the figure at about $392,000.
Quincy Jones
took the witness stand on July 20, telling jurors he was "cheated out of a lot of money" by Michael Jackson's estate. In 2003, Jones sued MJJ Productions and Sony Music Entertainment, asserting that songs such as "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," among others, were wrongly edited and remixed to exclude the prolific producer from backend profits and a producer's fee. The lawsuit alleged that Jones' contracts gave him the first option to re-edit or alter the songs as a way to protect his name.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael L. Stern resides on the case.
Jones' attorney, J. Michael Hennigan, sites not having adequate access to "audit material" from Sony (then CBS Records). Jones' legal team has publicly stated that their client is owned at least $30 million, but in the end a jury of mostly women decided.  Attorney for Jackson's estate, Howard Weitzman, tried to get Jones to concede that he is entitled to a share of album sales but not to licensing revenues for the Jackson recordings (ie: Cirque du Soleil shows, etc).  Jones asked the lawyer: "You ever made a No. 1 record?" "No," Weitzman said. "I know that," Jones replied. Did these financial consideration ever surface with the artist? Of course not. Jones said he worked with Jackson on the basis of "love, respect, and trust."  The irony: $9.5 million seems little compared to the $50 million in fees received by executors of Jackson's estate since his death ( testified by an attorney for the estate)

 RIP Chester Bennington  (1976-2017)

Linkin Park front man Chester Bennington, 41 was found dead in his home in Los Angeles.
"We were honored to pay tribute to him at our 2013 MusiCares MAP Fund® benefit concert, where he lent his time and talents to help raise money to assist members of the music community with the addiction treatment process," says Neil Portnow, President/CEO Recording Academy
Chester had talked about suicide as the result of childhood trauma and abuse. The news of his death came on the same day the band debuted a new music video for the single "Talking to Myself" off their latest album, "One More Light."  Linkin Park became one of the most commercially successful rock acts of the 2000s.
Their hits include "In the End," "What I've Done" and "Numb."
The bandmates added the group's future is unknown as they mourn the loss of Bennington. "Thank you for that gift. ....Until we see you again," said a band member in a social post.
Our deepest love and thoughts are with his wife, Talinda and six children, his band mates and extended family/friends around the world.

Linkin Park
One More Light
W.B.

Warner Brother released "One More Light" on May 19th, the seventh studio album by Linkin Park.  The sound and the logo ( full hexagon) are new. The juxtaposition of troubled Lyrics against calm and, at times, happy melodies, reveal an album that exposes inner struggles.  The music lets the members dance with demons of sorts.  It's a study of light and dark like the cover image itself. What inspired the album? Each band member sat down and wrote what they have been going through in their lives for the past two years. "Holy crap, that's been our lives, and we're being open about it," said Chester  Bennington in a live studio recording session intended to promote the release.  Sadly, this was also the last album featuring Bennington as lead vocalist before his untimely death on July 20, 2017.
Perhaps this process of introspection in making the new album brought the band members closer together.
" One More Light" (performed live on Jimmy Kimmel in May) is the heart of the album.
A fan writes in a YouTube post: "People say where is the suicide note......Damn the whole fucking album was the suicide note."
The album's first single " Heavy" featurs Kiara. "Good Goodbye" features verses by rappers Pusha T and Stormzy.  Yes, it sounds more pop and it's a departure from past works in many ways than one, including collaboration with electronic pop producers like Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Jesse Shatkin, and RAC.    According to the band, the lyrics and emotion drove the music and style of the songs on the record.  The music video for " Talking to Myself" was released on July 20, 2017, the same day that band member  Bennington died. "Battle Symphony" is a road trip, perhaps a looking glass into Chester's journey. In the end, the brightest light also had the darkest shadows. Farewell CB.  Thank you for your passion and music.

TELEFUNKEN   DIAMOND SERIES
 MICROPHONES From Trans Audio Group

Say hello to TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's flagship Diamond Series -- the ELAM 251E, U47, and C12 large-diaphragm as well as the ELAM 260 small-diaphragm condensers -- now available through Trans Audio Group.  "For the fraction of the price of a vintage unit (assuming one could even find a vintage unit for sale!), TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik has come closer to recreating the original 1950's era microphones than any other manufacturer to date," says Brad Lunde. And this is good news for studios who can have interchangeable parts and sonics of the very best vintage models. "Offering faithful recreations of these highly-valued originals has been Telefunken's goal from the beginning," adds Lunde.

Billy Raffoul
Dark Four Door
Interscope

A soulful rock singer/songwriter in the vein of Jeff Buckley and Joe Cocker, Ontario native Billy Raffoul was schooled in music from a young age. The son of respected regional solo artist Jody Raffoul, Billy spent his childhood immersed in the finer points of rock history, watching his father perform, and learning to play guitar himself. By his late teens, he'd begun performing around his hometown of Leamington, Ontario and nearby towns, writing songs and honing his stagecraft. A session vocal gig in nearby Detroit proved to be his first real break, leading first to a management deal then to a record deal with Interscope. Splitting his time between Nashville and Los Angeles, Raffoul released his debut single, "Driver," in the spring of 2017

"What's good about the SCM25A Pros is that they're more muscular; they've got more bass end, and you can control that... they manage to throw the sweet spot quite a long way into the room, so everyone can share it... but they have all that accuracy, so when you do sit yourself down in the sweet spot they're absolutely invaluable."

Two-time Grammu® winners Fleetwood Mac will be honored at the 2018 MusiCares® Person of the Year tribute on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018. Proceeds from the 28th annual benefit gala-to be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City during GRAMMY® Week two nights prior to the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards®-will provide essential support for  www.musicares.org, which ensures music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical, and personal need. The evening's tribute chairs are Shelli and Irving Azoff, Dorothy and Martin Bandier, Kristin and James Dolan, and Anna Chapman and Ronald Perelman.

Fleetwood Mac is being recognized for their significant creative accomplishments and their longtime support of a number of charitable causes, including MusiCares, the premier safety net of critical resources for the music industry.

"Our 2018 MusiCares Person of the Year tribute is a celebration of firsts-the first time our annual signature gala will be held in New York City in 15 years, and the first time in the benefit's history that we will honor a band.
This excitement is only matched by the genuine thrill and privilege of paying tribute to Fleetwood Mac, a legendary and influential group of artists whose music has provided the soundtrack for music lovers around the world."   said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the MusiCares Foundation® and the Recording Academy™.

"It's a tremendous honor to be the first band to receive the MusiCares Person of the Year award," said Mick Fleetwood on behalf of Fleetwood Mac. "We applaud and celebrate MusiCares' guiding principles of giving musicians a helping hand and a place to turn in times of need. We are very appreciative of this recognition."

As one of the best-selling bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac have sold more than 100 million records worldwide and established their place in rock and roll music history. Having created a distinctive sound that endures today, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Their 1977 album Rumours remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 2015, the band's classic and most successful line up-comprising Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Stevie Nicks-reunited for the first time since 1998 for the On With The Show tour. The tour sold out arenas across the globe and showcased classic hit songs from Fleetwood Mac's career such as "The Chain," "Go Your Own Way," "Dreams," "Don't Stop," "Big Love," "Little Lies," and "Rhiannon," among others.

The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week and was last held in New York City in 2003. The celebration culminates with the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018. Jade Bird
Something American - EP
Universal Music Group

A London-based singer/songwriter with a powerful voice, J ade Bird offers a winsome mix of folk, pop, and rustic Americana. Drawn to songwriting at a young age, Bird spent her teenage years gigging around England, moving to London when she was only 16 to hone her stagecraft and immerse herself in the city's folk circuit. The success of a live YouTube performance of her song "Madeline" eventually won Bird a deal with Glassnote Records who released her debut EP, Something American, in 2017. Catch Jade BIrd in LA,

Music Streaming Service
The Next Frontier for Tesla and Elon Musk

Driving a Tesla has been likened to sitting in the future. During a shareholders meeting, Elon Musk showed off his first mass-market electric Model 3 at a tune of $35k. He was also critical of existing streaming algorithms and the quality of their playlists, promising to build a music service feature for his company's vehicles that would be capable of suggesting "the music you want to listen to."  The carmaker has had talks with all of the major labels about licensing a proprietary music service that would come bundled with its cars, which already come equipped with a high-tech dashboard and internet connectivity.  Right now, Spotify and Apple have the clear lead: Spotify says it has at least 50 million paying subscribers for its service, and Apple says it has 27 million. Tesla has delivered over 100,000 as of January 2017.
It's a big jump from a 10 buck a month streaming service into a $30K+ automobile. How often do you think that will happen?
But, watch out if you're Sirius XM!  Tesla's SpaceX is scheduled to launch a network of 4,425 mid-earth orbit satellites in 2019 which could compete seriously with Sirius-like services.
