The current election cycle has brought planning to the forefront of public debate in Los Angeles, with the Build Better LA, Neighborhood Integrity, and Land Use Voter Empowerment initiatives each proposing to guide land use and development with the hand of the electorate. Other cities will be making similar decisions on issues large and small.

From Proposition U in Los Angeles to Ventura's SOAR initiatives, voters in California have gone to the ballot box on land use questions many times. For planners, such initiatives represent not just policy decisions, but complications to their work - and to some, a threat to the very practice of professional planning.

Join APA Los Angeles for a thoughtful discussion of the impacts of proposed and passed land use measures, and the forms they have taken over the years and across the state. Our guests include:
  • Raphael Bostic, Chair of the Department of Governance, Management and the Policy Process, USC Price
  • Con Howe, Former Director of City Planning, Los Angeles
  • Josh Stephens, Contributing Editor, California Planning Development Report (moderator)
  • Woodie Tescher, Principal, PlaceWorks
  • Diana Varat, of counsel at Richards, Watson & Gershon and lecturer at UCLA Luskin
Drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Transit is available via the Red Line Civic Center/Grand Park Station, Gold Line Little Tokyo Station and Metro bus lines. Public parking is available in Little Tokyo garages. The underground garage at 140 N. Judge John Aiso St. offers a $3 flat rate after 5 PM.

APA Los Angeles Presents:
Planning For Death
Saturday, Nov 5
10 AM - 12 PM
Rosedale Cemetery
1831 W. Washington Blvd. 90007
FREE for members & students / $10 non-members

Welcome to Angelus-Rosedale cemetery, one of the oldest and most storied cemeteries in Southern California. The resting place of six former Los Angeles Mayors and others whose names Angelenos with a knowledge of our city's geography should recognize: David Burbank, Harvey H. Wilcox, Frederick T. Woodman.

Join APA for a walking tour of the cemetery by preservationist Laura Meyers, as well as a discussion of the planning aspects of cemeteries, and this cemetery in particular. When, how, and for whom was the cemetery founded? What determined its demographic makeup over the years? Who are some of the famous Angelenos buried at Rosdedale? What role does the cemetery play in the identity of the West Adams neighborhood? How does the cemetery operate in the face of changing economics and trends in the burial of loved ones? What are some of the entitlement processes involved in planning cemeteries? What does the future hold? These and many other questions will be discussed.

The event will wrap up around lunchtime, and those of us who are hungry will head over to Papa Cristo's Greek Restaurant, a mainstay in the neighborhood.

Planning Month and #IAmPlanning Social Media Challenge!

In honor of #PlanningMonth, the YPG of California and APA National are teaming up for the 2nd annual #IAmPlanning Social Media Campaign. This campaign was created to give young planners, both APA members and non-members, the opportunity to share the reasons they chose the planning profession. The purpose of the campaign is to highlight the different faces and backgrounds of young planners across the nation.

Please use your platform to generate buzz about the #IAmPlanning Campaign and encourage your network to participate. The instructions above can be downloaded and shared on various social media platforms with a short explanation of the campaign.  #IAmPlanning is a great way to engage a new generation of planners in the American Planning Association at the local, state, and national level.

Seeking Donations for Our CPF Auction Baskets

The APA California Conference is coming up
October 22-25 at the Pasadena Convention Center. One of the signature events is the Silent and Live Auction of items and gift baskets to benefit the California Planning Foundation (CPF). Each year, planners show their dedication and support for CPF by donating amazing items to help fund scholarships for planning students. Taking place on Sunday, October 23, the event will feature entertainment, food, drink and fun all in one place to support a great cause!

APA Los Angeles will be preparing three gift baskets for the auction.  As such, we are seeking members to donate items that match the conference theme of "Creating Our Future - The Art of Planning," with a special emphasis on items, services, art, or event tickets that highlight the art and beauty of Los Angeles!  We're seeking your help to make our baskets the best of the auction!  Please contact CPF Liaison Ana Cubas at cpf@apalosangeles.org if you have any items to donate. Thank you and we look forward to receiving your great ideas and items!
