THURSDAY FOLDER
News & Information for Greenwood Elementary

10/27/16
From the Desk of Dr. G
Principal's Podcast Crew
Our 5th grade student podcasters recently started creating short videos that we plan to share with families in E-news throughout the year. (Next week's podcast features six kids teaching their parents how to ask about the school day...it will be AWESOME!) This week we wanted to share a book talk video for October's monthly read aloud, Ada Twist, Scientist. Check it out HERE. I've enjoyed having conversations with classes about two scientists whose passion for learning led them to make amazing discoveries: Marie Curie and Ada Lovelace.

Honoring our Veterans
Our school will be honoring Veterans and those currently serving our country on November 9. All scouts are invited to wear their uniforms if they'd like. If you are a scout leader who is interested in having your troop or den participate in the school assembly please contact me. On behalf of Mr. Westgard and our entire school, we'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to those serving our country and the sacrifices their families make as well.

*If you have a relative who is a Veteran or active-duty please invite them to join us as a V.I.P. at 8:30am for small reception (coffee and cookies) preceding our school-wide assembly that begins at 9:00am on November 9. Visitors and their distinguished guests are asked to bring a photo ID to assist with our new check-in process. If you are not a veteran or on active-duty you will be able to view the assembly from home or work via a live-stream link that will be shared at 9:00am on Twitter under our school's hashtag #GWgreats.

School Pictures
In the next few days students will be bringing home their school pictures. There is an opportunity for retakes on November 7.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Brad Gustafson, Principal
Pasta Dinner and Bingo
Please join us for a great night of family fun on Friday, November 18 for our fourth annual Pasta Dinner and Bingo Night. The Pasta Dinner begins at 5:00pm and Bingo goes from 6:30-8:00pm. The Pasta Dinner will be catered by Davanni's and tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, November 9. (There is no school on November 10-11.) Click HERE for details. Questions? Please contact Heidi at hmanderson77@gmail.com

Turkey Bingo
After dinner, join us for Turkey Bingo in the gym. Door and cash prizes will be given along with raffle items, and, of course, a turkey! Snacks will be served for a nominal fee. Bingo cards will be sold the night of the event in packs of ten for $5. For each pack of ten bingo cards, you will receive one raffle ticket. We are in need of volunteers for this event. Please contact Andrea at akrabe44@gmail.com or Melissa at Melissa.millo@target.com.
Announcing Bid Green for Greenwood
This online auction is coming in late November and will be a terrific source for holiday gifts!

Bid Green for Greenwood will allow Greenwood families to bid on and purchase unique and useful items donated from our local community while raising money for our school.

We are also accepting donations. If you own or work for a business that could make a donation, please drop it off in the office or contact Michelle at michellemterry@gmail.com.

Volunteers Needed
It takes a village to put together our wonderful fundraisers. We have sent over 200 letters to solicit donations for the silent auction. We need volunteers to follow up (in person or with a phone call) with the potential donors. This is even a job you can share with a friend! The areas that need coverage are: Vicksburg Plaza, Lowe's Complex, and 1-494 and Rockford Road. Check out the Sign Up Genius HERE.
KICKS Update
KICKS Meeting Friday, October 28
Thank you to all 5th grade students who applied for KICKS (Kids In Community Kare & Service). Our first KICKS meeting will be Friday, October 28 from 12:45-2:00pm. Students will perform various tasks for their first service project Treats for Troops.

If you'd like to help with KICKS, please contact: Andrea (andreamcmaster2@yahoo.com) or Paula (epdahmer@gmail.com).

Treats for Troops
KICKS students will collect Halloween candy to be packaged and sent to US military troops. Please bring your candy donations to school November 1-4 and drop it in the front hallway between 7:30-7:45am.  Please sort candy into three bags: chocolate, non-chocolate and Halloween-labeled.
Box Tops Contest
A Box Tops for Education contest will be held Monday, October 24 through Friday, November 18. Each week, students who turn in 25 unexpired Box Tops will be entered in a drawing to earn a prize or a gift card to a local business. Students can enter multiple times per week. Two names will be drawn and announced each Friday.

Please include your child's name, grade and teacher in a zip lock bag with 25 unexpired Box Tops (neatly clipped). Have your student drop their bag in the Box Tops rolling cart located in the front hallway. Contact Margaret with questions at pipshome@mindspring.com.
Picture Retake Day
A reminder that Picture Retake Day is Monday, November 7.  If your student wishes to have their picture retaken, please remember to send the original picture package back to school with your child. If your student missed Picture Day, please have them pick up a form and payment envelope in the office and bring the completed envelope with payment on Retake Day.

Look for new adventures posted in your school's e-folder and in your student's school cafeteria.
A Message from Health Services
The staff at Health Services has received several calls from parents who are concerned that there are significant cases of lice in the schools. Although we have not found this to be true, we wanted to be proactive in addressing these concerns. It is our policy that we send home letters whenever a case of lice is identified in a classroom. We ask that parents then check their students and contact the health office if they find lice on their child. Any time that there are two or more students in a classroom who have lice, health services staff will check all classmates. We also check any student who was treated for lice when they return to school. This however, cannot happen unless parents let us know if their child has lice. Please contact us if you discover that your child has lice and be assured that this is private information. If we have this information, we can then follow our guidelines. It is also recommended that parents periodically check their child for lice. Directions for this process can be found by clicking HERE.

Schools often function as the "de facto mental health system for children. School-based mental health, which broadly includes mental health services offered in a school setting is an important strategy to meet the needs of children and families. For more information, click HERE.
