How to Ask Mutual Friends
about a Potential Match
It is always good (and exciting!) when you learn that you share a mutual friend (or two) with a potential match idea. It gives you a chance to hear more about the match from someone you know and possibly trust. Here comes the challenge: when that mutual, trusted friend says, and they often do, "I do not see you two together," you automatically want to decline.
Wait, let's take a step back. When asking mutual friends about a match idea, we should remember that just because they know both of you, that does not necessarily mean that they can determine if you are a good match! How many happy couples have we all seen that we never would have joined together? It happens! Before you speak to the mutual friend (or any reference), think about what you would like to know and some questions that will help you decide. Then focus on those specific questions, rather than generally asking, "Do you see us together?" And, regardless of what that mutual friend thinks, it does not guarantee the suitability of the idea. After all, you know people from various stages of your life: childhood, high school, college and beyond. You reveal different parts of yourself to different people at these various times. So, ask away and learn what you can from someone you trust about a match idea. Make the decision to meet him or her based on the totality of what you heard about the person, not simply whether someone else thinks its suitable idea or not.

After graduating Stern with a BA in Judaic Studies, I am currently pursuing my masters degree at Wurzweiler School of Social Work. I love sleep-away camp, especially Camp Morasha.
