Senate Continues Debate on ACA Repeal
As this issue of News Now is being written, the US Senate continues to debate possible changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  It's expected that Republicans will bring forward a proposal to repeal a limited number of elements of the ACA, including the mandate that individuals purchase insurance, the tax on medical devices, and the requirement that large employers offer health insurance coverage or else pay a fine.  Passage of this "skinny repeal," proponents argue, would allow the Senate to continue negotiations in a conference committee of Senate and House members. MMA Urges: Rally for Research on Aug. 5 at State Capitol
The MMA is partnering with the American Cancer Society and several other health care organizations to sponsor the Minnesota Rally for Research on Aug. 5 from 1 to 2:30pm at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Read more here.
Hospital Association Releases Tool for Newborns Exposed to Opioids
The Minnesota Hospital Association has released a toolkit to better screen for and treat pregnant women and their newborn babies who are addicted to opioids. Neonatal abstinence syndrome, or NAS, is drug withdrawal that occurs in newborns who were exposed to opioids prior to birth. NAS is on the rise in Minnesota and nationwide. Access the toolkit here
Time to Submit Issues for Open Issues Forum at Annual Conference
Have an issue for which MMA action may be needed?  Submit  it for consideration at the Open Issues Forum, held annually at the MMA Annual Conference. This is a great opportunity to bring issues to the attention of the MMA, to discuss issues submitted by your fellow colleagues, and to get perspective on issues from physicians across the state. Deadline: Friday, Aug. 11.
Last Chance to Share Research at the 4th Annual Poster Symposium
Get feedback from practicing physicians on your research! Submit an  abstract  to be considered for a poster presentation during the MMA's Annual Conference on Sept. 23 in Rochester. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in and actively pursuing an approved course within Minnesota leading to the degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathy, or engaged in a resident or fellow program approved by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education. If you have questions regarding eligibility, contact the MMA at  [email protected] . Accepted poster entrants receive free registration to the conference. Submission deadline: Aug. 6.
