Why your Company Needs a Foreign Policy
In February 2014, Russia invaded the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, and the following month, it announced Crimea's annexation. This sudden act marked the beginning of the first major strategic crisis in Europe in a generation and served as a wake-up call to business leaders. As the crisis was unfolding, the Bank of England surveyed business executives on their views of systemic risk and in June published the striking results: 57% cited geopolitical risk as the greatest challenge facing their business, up from 13% the previous year. Subsequent Bank of England surveys have all ranked geopolitical risk as the most challenging risk to manage above cyberattacks, financial disruption, and even an economic downturn.
Geopolitics is back just witness the recent Brexit decision, which will dramatically change the future shape of the EU as much as the UK's relationship to it-and not just in Europe. A more confident China has taken measures to assert its territorial claims in the East and South China Seas. In the Middle East, advances by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and its declaration of a caliphate have threatened the territorial integrity of several states. ISIL's advances in Libya and the activities of other terrorist groups in West Africa have further destabilized governance across large territories there. The internal politics of Africa and Latin America, too, are often mercurial.
Adding to the climate of destabilization, the United States is no longer certain to intervene if the status quo in some region or other is challenged. With no clear "world policeman," few effective "neighborhood watch" schemes, and a growing number of vigilante groups eager to challenge the rules of the game, many parts of the world look and feel unstable. Companies cannot assume, in any region of the world, that the strategic status quo will be sustained by neat balances of power or unbreakable promises of foreign policy assistance from superpower states.
In this new reality, the most successful multinational companies will be those that make expertise in international affairs central to their operations, adopting what can best be described as a corporate foreign policy. Such a policy will have two goals: to improve a company's ability to operate in foreign environments through effective corporate diplomacy, and to ensure its success wherever it is engaged through careful geopolitical due diligence.
Multinationals operate in many different environments and in many industries; however, several principles underlie successful corporate foreign policy wherever it is practiced. Adhering to them can provide a new source of competitive advantage.
Geopolitical Risk Today
When my organization, the London-based geopolitical think tank IISS, hosted a workshop for executives in 1994 on the topic "Do companies need a foreign policy?" the session was quite muted. At the time, companies were content to consider the still relatively novel concepts of CSR and stakeholder engagement as part of a global business strategy but thought foreign policy was a step too far. Avoiding politics-standing above or apart from the political fray-was the preferred method for protecting interests and advancing reputation. Now when I speak to executives, most realize that their company must adopt a stronger foreign policy attitude. There are several key reasons for this shift.

Mayor Garcetti launches Export Program to help L.A. Companies Expand their Business Internationally
Thousands of local manufacturers are getting the boost they need to expand their reach overseas, thanks to a new export initiative from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
The initiative will support local manufacturing by helping L.A.-based companies access international trade opportunities, and prepare their businesses to export products to other countries. Mayor Garcetti launched the program on October 19th alongside a group of dignitaries and local business leaders.
"Los Angeles' economy is surging - we're creating jobs, attracting businesses, and making generational investments in a prosperous future for our city," said Mayor Garcetti. "Increasing exports can make our economy even stronger, by helping local companies grow and create even more good-paying jobs. L.A. is already on the world stage, and this export initiative will give our businesses new opportunities to have global reach."
A strong export market is critical to the health of our economy, in Los Angeles and across America. For every $1 billion of exports, the economy creates nearly 6,000 new jobs. And although 95 percent of the world's consumers live outside the U.S., only one percent of U.S. companies currently export. As a major international trade hub, and the nation's largest customs district, the L.A. region can play a crucial role in boosting the national export market.
Mayor Garcetti's new program is designed to guide local manufacturers through the complex export readiness process, help them address key challenges, and connect them with a variety of training and counseling services available through city, state, and federal partners. Mayor Garcetti's team will also escort delegations of local companies on trade missions to pursue new business opportunities around the world.
The initiative is just one of many efforts by Mayor Garcetti to support international trade in Los Angeles, and across the country. Prior to the program's launch, he joined U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker to announce a national effort to make America's supply chains more efficient and competitive in the global market.
Mayor Garcetti's export initiative is a partnership between the City of Los Angeles, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Los Angeles Regional Export Council, World Trade Center Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board, and Sister Cities of Los Angeles.

National Manufacturing Day at L.A. Valley College
Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) hosted an event to celebrate National Manufacturing Day on  October 21. About 200 students from local schools attended the event to learn from representatives from a variety of manufacturing companies and educational programs.

Aero Jet Rocketdyne, Boeing/Spectrolab, Clarke Engineering, DW Drums, Kinetic Die Casting, Mastercam, Optical Zonu, Schrillo, United Precision Corporation and Verisurf were among the companies that exhibited and shared the technology involved in making their products. Business representatives spoke to students about the development, processes, and quality needed to be successful in the industry and encouraged them to consider pursuing manufacturing careers.
Representatives from Cerritos College, College of the Canyons, North Valley Occupational Center, L.A. Mission College, Pierce College, and LAVC also informed students about programs in manufacturing including short-term vocational certificates, two-year, and transfer programs.
The highlight of the day was a motivating presentation by Congressman Tony Cardenas, who urged students to follow their dream by working hard and not allow negative people distract them from their goals.

The eventful day ended with a diverse panel of local manufacturers who answered questions by the students in the audience. Panel of speakers included Paul Graham, President of Schrillo Company; Carmen Kernek, HR Director at Avibank; Juan Tovar, HR Director at Klune Industries, and Mike Hakonssan, sales manager at Acufast Aircraft Products.

TradePort forms Alliance with Crimson Logic; leaders in "Single Window" Trade Facilitation
The Monterey Bay International Trade Association (MBITA) and the TradePort network have formed a strategic alliance with CrimsonLogic and their new GeTS  "Single Window" (SW) trade facilitation online service starting with a series of webinars aimed at the global trade business community in California.
The logistic challenges that custom brokers, freight forwarders and small and mid-sized enterprises face to consummate a successful global trade transaction are at the forefront in the current, disruptive, evolution of online, on-demand trade facilitation (TF) global trade logistic services. The current trend and eminent future of TF will be funneled through the SW where the transmission of one document online generates all shipment documentation in a standard digital format compatible in all foreign markets.
Just as other industries have been disrupted by new online technologies, this metamorphosis of how we traditionally conduct business in the logistic sector of global trade is rapidly changing. Organizations such as the United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business and the World Customs Organization, among many other global organizations, now have active programs that focus on the general benefits and technical advantages of paperless trade through SW.
MBITA and TradePort are offering a complimentary series of webinars on "The Disruption of Global Trade" this month. Visit www.mbita.org/webinars  to view webinar schedule and email [email protected] for reservations.
