Mike Morse & Sea Raven Announce their Handfasting: Saturday, August 5, 3:00 p.m.  (Sanctuary) "Three years ago, we made a sacred commitment to one another to build a future for ourselves that included the continuing care and nurture of Carol, Mike's wife of 54 years, who died January 1, 2016.  We are deeply grateful for the affirmation we have experienced for our sacred commitment, and for the honor and nurture extended to us along the way. The meaning of our love has been enriched by your support and your continuing care.  Now, we invite our community of friends to join us in celebrating our continuing relationship, as our beautiful garden grows. All are welcome." Please RSVP to  [email protected].

From our newest UU Seminarian and Director of Religious Education, Lora Powell-Haney: "Yes, I'm back from two weeks at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago! And, yes, I will be returning there several times over the next few years. I wanted to share a little about the model the school uses, so you will know why I may not be here on Sundays sometimes, and will be seeking out the talented folks here for support of the religious education program at UUFrederick when I need to be away.
  • Meadville Lombard has a low-residency model of education (this is only about seven years old). This means that most of the work of reading, writing, service work, internships, etc. can be done while I continue to work as the director of religious education here. Three-four times per year (about once a semester), I will spend one to four weeks in Chicago for intensive classes, one week for each class, 9am-5pm for five days. INTENSE. Sometimes there will be writing or projects to do after class, but usually final papers and projects will be due after the intensives are finished and I am back home again.
  • For example, I registered for two classes this summer, read several books in preparation for each, and wrote one paper that was turned in for "Global Religions and Their Material Expressions" class before intensives. I then went to Chicago for two weeks (and over two weekends); the first week was the intensive for "Global Religions" and the second for "Theology in Black and Brown." The class days consisted of lecture, dialog, small group discussions, large group discussions, and presentations.
Now that I am home again, I have a little bit of after-class reading to do and several papers to write, which will be due in mid-August.
Here is my schedule of intensives for the fall semester, just so you'll know when I will be away, and when I will need to call on you wonderful, talented, committed people!
  • August 28-September 1 (M-F; leaving Sunday after service, returning late Friday) for Community Studies seminar and Fall Ingathering
  • January 3-26 (yes, nearly the whole month, but I will be back for the first weekend) for January Learning Convocation and three classes.
  • Spring semester: March 19-30 (two classes)
In October, I will begin serving eight hours a week with a local (Frederick area) non-profit as part of the Community Studies class. Then, next summer (2018), I will undertake Clinical Pastoral Education or CPE training, again locally.

I'll share my reading lists and learnings with you as I can (all that writing!), and want to thank you for your support and encouragement. With only two classes under my belt, I am already a different person than I was: thank you for that gift and I hope to use it to the benefit of the religious education program at UUFrederick. Blessed be!
