Holiday Light Show
Prairie Home Hospice to Host Annual Holiday Lights Event
This holiday season will bring something new and exciting to the area! Prairie Home Hospice is working with a number of partners in the community to host "Light Up the Night", with hopes it will become an annual holiday tradition for families in the community and region. "We hope to create a winter wonderland in the stadium area on the beautiful campus of Southwest Minnesota State University, and provide a magical holiday experience that will draw people from across the region," said Pat Mellenthin, Prairie Home Hospice CEO. "While we hope that freewill donations at the event will help to support our hospice mission, the event also provides an opportunity to showcase the SMSU campus and our community; highlight other events in the community; and benefit our local businesses during the holidays."
The idea has been brewing for a few months, according to Mellenthin. "We knew we couldn't pull off an event like this without strong partnerships in the community. As we began meeting with potential partners, we realized they were just as excited as we were about the concept. SMSU made a commitment to support the event and allow it to be held on campus. We met with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and the City of Marshall. They all embraced the concept as well. After the kind of support those partners showed, we knew this was something that was right for the community. Given the scope of this project, we invited Holy Redeemer to partner with us in efforts to recruit volunteers within the faith community and assist in promoting the event. They will be involved in the planning, and will share in the proceeds. "
Plans are to kick off the event the evening of Thursday, November 30th. The event will then be held from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday evenings in December, except for Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the lights will be left on. "Light Up the Night" activities will wrap up with a New Year's Eve Party at the SMSU Regional Event Center. Tickets for this event will go on sale in October. Plans are to ring in the New Year with a fireworks display at midnight, which can be viewed from the Regional Event Center.
"We want this to be an event that everyone will want to make a holiday tradition," said Tara Plante, Prairie Home Hospice Fundraising & Special Events Manager. "We want everyone who attends to have a memorable experience that they will tell all their friends about. We hope word of the event will spread across the region. We'll promote the event across the region, but we hope word of mouth will also provide strong support for our marketing efforts. If we can create the kind of event we envision, I have no doubt that will happen."
According to Plante, "the support that Prairie Home Hospice has received so far for this event is very encouraging, but it takes a community to make it a success. We welcome every partner and volunteer who's willing to help in any way."
"Unlike most fundraising events, we will not be soliciting major sponsorships," according to Plante. "The community already supports us in so many ways. We don't want to ask local businesses for significant sponsorships to support another event. In fact, we hope that this will be an opportunity to 'give back' by hosting an event that will benefit the business community. Other successful holiday light shows raise funds simply by asking for freewill donations from those who attend the event, and we think that will work for us as well."
A booklet will be created and distributed that highlights the event and other activities in the community during December. Local businesses may place a promotional sponsorship in the booklet that highlights their business, offers a coupon, or etc. "We anticipate distributing at least 2,000 of the booklets," said Plante. The cost of the promotional sponsorships start at $50 per business card size promotion. Businesses that are interested can contact Tara Plante. Organizations that would also like to list activities or events happening in the community in December may also contact Tara. There is no charge to list community events and activities in the booklet.
Anyone interested in volunteering or supporting this event in any way are asked to contact Tara Plante at (507)337-0080. Donations are welcome to help offset the initial cost of lights and equipment. When making donations, please indicate the purpose of your donation.
