It was twenty years ago that Eve Ensler first performed her play
The Vagina Monologues
in the basement of the Cornelia Street Café in Greenwich Village. The performance was unusual to say the least. No artist had ever interviewed women about their vaginas and turned their stories into an out loud performance. But from those interviews and that humble debut,
The Vagina Monologues
and Eve's riveting performances have become cultural legends, inspiring a powerful anti -violence movement.
The play has been translated into 48 languages and performed in over 120 countries. Celebrities who have starred in it include: Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Cyndi Lauper, Sandra Oh and Oprah Winfrey. Ensler was awarded the Obie Award in 1996 for 'Best New Play' and in 1999 was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship Award in Playwriting.
Eve's later work including
The Good Body (2004) and
I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World (2011) continue her tradition of confronting fierce and painful truths to empower women and girls.
