Jesus is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:17
Counseling Corner September 11, 2017

Dear Saints,

I am praying that your first month of school has been fruitful! We are blessed to be meeting with all of our freshmen over the next few weeks during their Freshman Conference.

In HIS Love,
Mrs. Garcia

Back-to-School Night
All parents are invited to attend Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 12 (new date) from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. This parents-only event will be preceded by an optional Canvas workshop. Whether or not you choose to attend the workshop, please carpool and arrive early. We have reserved the Athletic Complex and through partnership with the Irvine Police Department, the North side of Spring Meadow as well, but it may take ten minutes to reach the school's plaza from either of these locations.

College Application Madness
Starting Tuesday, September 12, come and join the Counselors in room 102 from 2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. to work on your college applications. Bring your laptop and any questions about your application, about how to send test scores, about the UC Personal Insight Questions and more.  Counselors will be offering this workshop every Tuesday and Wednesday all the way through November.
Attention Seniors
Senior College Planning Night is approaching! Mark your calendars for Tuesday , September 5, at 6:00 p.m. and click here to RSVP. The presentation will take place in the MPR, and both students and their parents are invited to attend.
Club Rush
Getting involved with a club on campus is great for a number of reasons. Club involvement is imperative for future college applications, and it is also a great way to serve with your peers in the community. Club Rush will be held during lunch on Thursday, September 28. Click here to fill out an application, if you would like to start your own club this year.
Freshman Conferences
All freshmen will meet individually with their counselor in the month of September. It is important to meet with new high school students early, get to know them, and share information related to the functions of counselors; however, as we have roughly 200 freshmen, these initial meetings are student-only and will necessarily be brief.  I am looking forward to getting to know each one of you personally!
WITH HOPE Parent Night
With Hope -- The Amber Craig Memorial Foundation will be presenting this year to all students about mental health awareness and suicide prevention during Chapel on Thursday, October 12. Parents are invited to join us on Tuesday, October 10  to view the presentation that students will be seeing on October 12 in Chapel. It is important that we keep the lines of communication open about mental health issues, including suicide and depression, as these are issues that many students face. We hope to see you all there. Please click here to RSVP
Senior Brag Sheets Due October 1
Seniors, if you will be requesting any letters of recommendation for college applications or scholarships,   please be sure to complete the Senior Brag Sheet and turn it in to your counselor by October 1 .  The Brag Sheet has a student questionnaire as well as a parent questionnaire. Both components of this Brag Sheet are incredibly helpful, when it comes to writing a well-rounded letter of recommendation that speaks to your strengths and character.
Christian College Fair
Capistrano Valley Christian School is hosting their annual Christian College Fair on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

FAFSA Parent Night
Attention class of 2018 students and parents! We are hosting FAFSA Parent Night on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. We will be discussing  the updated FAFSA, scholarships, loans, and much more! Save the date, and RSVP here  .
College Tours
The first trip will occur on Wednesday, October 4, when we visit Point Loma Nazarene University and the University of San Diego. This year, we are blessed to attend a chapel service at Point Loma University! College tours are a great investment, as it is important for students to visit many different colleges -- rural and suburban, large and small -- to determine what school will be a "best fit." Click here for the registration form. Both the form and payment are due on September 15.
Presidential Service Award
Freshman and Sophomores 15 years of age or younger, who complete volunteer service hours are encouraged to apply for the Gold Level Presidential Service Award. The award only requires 100 hours of volunteer work in a single year (less than two hours per week).  That volunteer work may take place at more than one location.  It is important for a student to complete this award while age 14 or 15, because when they turn 16, they need 250 hours in a single year (over four hours per week). In order to associate one's self with CLHS as the assigner of the award, the student must use the ROS Key SVU-6020.    Click here for information on the criteria and eligibility. See your counselor to apply!
Learning Success Program
As we enter the fourth week of school, many of you have noticed that the workload is dramatically increasing and that time management is becoming more difficult for your student.  Navigating homework, studying, and extracurricular activities are not always easy and can be a daily source of frustration.  Many of you are searching for support groups and resources that you can use to help not only your child but your entire family.  Understood is a fantastic organization that provides a wealth of information and support for families that are living with attention and learning issues.  Check out their website to find articles, tips, blogs, and events in your local area.
Tip of The Week
Do as I Say and I Do . Teens are very sensitive to hypocrisy. Do you expect of yourself what you expect of your teenager? If you want your child to open up, you have to be open. If you want your child to read his or her Bible every night, you have to read your Bible every night. Your teen may never admit it, but he or she will follow the example you set.
