CENEX at the AASP Meeting in Houston, TX

Dr. Sophie Warny's CENEX group was well represented at this year's AASP-The Palynological Society meeting. Nine members including: Dr. Sophie Warny, Patrick Baudoin, Shannon Ferguson, Mitch Gregory, David Rau, Dr. Yunfa Miao, Dr. Kate Griener, Dr. Marie Thomas, and Dr. Rebecca Tedofrd attended the meeting in Houston.

Patrick Baudoin won second place for the LR Wilson Oral Presentation Competition!

As of this month we know more about one particularly unusual region on Mars, an area with high elevation called Thaumasia Planum. Researchers in the LSU Planetary Science Laboratory including Don Hood, Department of Geology & Geophysics doctoral candidate and lead author of a new paper in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets, have studied the geography and mineralogy of an area they termed Greater Thaumasia. By analyzing the chemistry of the area, they found that it was most likely created by a series of volcanic events.

Paige Jarreau from the College of Science sat down with Don to learn more about why Mars is so interesting but also a relatively new field for geologists.

The story of Mowgli takes place in the jungles of India. The survival of the animals cohabiting with Mowgli and that of the lush tropical forest, normally supported by heavy rainfall, is threatened by a severe drought.

In respect to the drought, the movie intrinsically links life to climate. Safeguarding life as we know it in the face of a changing climate is a complicated issue. Louisiana residents know too well the difficulties one can face adapting to the effects of a warming climate and associated sea-level rise, increased rainfall, and increased hurricane activity in the Gulf.

Understanding the variability of climate and predicting how the Earth system will respond to changes is not an easy task.  Modelers have to combine the various effects influencing our climate to predict its future.

Researchers in the LSU College of Science are leading the way in answering questions about Mars, its geology, and its potential for supporting life. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to Mars, with the goal of sending a human mission to Mars in the 2030's. LSU researchers are helping to answer questions relevant to that mission, such as whether humans might contaminate Mars with Earth microbes possessing the potential to survive there, and to design equipment and experiments that may go on new missions to Mars.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Magliolo has his hands in a lot of pots, and he's fine with that.

In fact, not only is Magliolo a U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, but he's also a graduate research assistant entering his fourth year at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he is earning a master's degree in geology.

Magliolo also is a husband and father.

At the same time, the active on-campus volunteer also is passionate about helping military veterans navigate energy-related professions, which he thinks are a perfect match for vets seeking to stay connected to national security-related job opportunities.

TI News Daily recently asked Magliolo about the specific work he's doing at LSU as he endeavors to help give back to military veterans.

SCAR - Best North American Poster

We would like to congratulate Jade Lawrence for being awarded the Best North American Poster at the 2016 Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) conference. This 1,000 person international conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
