August 2017
 Working Together, Building Together
Carlos Bell, President
I am writing this article with a focus on the ACPE Foundation. "The mission of the ACPE Foundation is to secure funding that supports the mission and promotes innovative developments of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE). The foundation is responsible for development of financial resources, management of the endowment and safeguarding of ACPE assets."

The Foundation is blessed with dedicated and caring employees and board volunteers who give of their time, service, and expertise to advance ACPE as the Gold Standard of competent and quality spiritual care and education. In addition, 100 percent of the ACPE Board of Directors and National Office Staff participated in the 2016 Annual Campaign.

2018 Billing Update
Since ACPE's membership adopted a new governance structure at the end of 2016, the association's leadership has been assiduously implementing the new design and consolidating its business model. Finance, billing, event planning, and communications are being streamlined for efficiency and consistency.

This first year of consolidated billing represents an attempt to bring together the vastly different fees across the country into a unified model that supports the activities our members have come to expect.

ACPE Office Updating Software
Please prepare for downtime the week of August 7-11, 2017.

The national office is in the process of updating our association management software (AMS). It is the primary tool for many of the office's services.

During the downtime, members and staff will not be able to do the following:
* Log-in to accounts
* Access member directories
* Process or accept payments
* Register for events
* Register student units (enroll or provide credit)

 Accreditation News
Wayne Maberry,
Accreditation Chair
It has been a busy year for the Accreditation Commission with many 10-Year Reviews and a lot of new activity with satellites and centers.

I wanted to provide information about accreditation as it relates to the current transitions of ACPE. After affirming the work of the Certification Reform Work Group, the Board of Directors appointed an Accreditation Work Group. The work group is deeply engaged in their work but they are not yet finished so the Accreditation Commission will continue to function as it currently does.

grants awarded
The 2017 Innovative Program Award grant cycle is now open! Applicants are invited to submit proposals for innovative CPE projects that do not exceed $10,000. This year $29,000 is available in funding.

Grants may be awarded at three levels:
  • One grant may be awarded in the range of $7,501-$10,000
  • One grant may be awarded in the range of $5,001-$7,500
  • Other grants may be awarded in amounts up to $5,000 to the extent of funds available.
If no grants are awarded at the $10,000 or $7,500 maximum levels, funds reserved for these grants may be reallocated to provide support for projects at up to $5,000.

As I write this, I wonder what I have forgotten ... and where the summer has gone. When my schedule gets busy, I rely heavily on multiple calendars (work, home, church) to keep me on track. But, the most reliable way for me to remember a commitment is to write it on a list. I hope making your "Gift of 5" to celebrate ACPE's 50th Anniversary made it to your to-remember list!

Within the coming weeks, you will hear from your "Decades' Competition Champion" about ways you can make sure ACPE continues to be the premier provider of spiritual care and education. Those who were certified or joined ACPE in the 90s are currently winning! Join the competition by making your gift HERE today!
You can make a significant gift to ACPE that costs you nothing now, and will keep on giving for years to come. Your gift can also memorialize a loved one. Here's how:

A gift in your will is one way you can secure your estate and create an impactful legacy with ACPE. A gift in your will has many advantages:
Interview Guidelines
We received the following reminder from our colleagues at Emory University's HR department regarding interviews with CPE students and candidates for positions within spiritual care departments:

 "Under the ADA, employers may not ask disability-related questions or conduct medical examinations until after they make a conditional job offer to an applicant..."
