Nonprofit Spotlight: Upwardly Global, Tuesday Sept 19 at 6:15pm

Today there are more than 1.8 million immigrants in the U.S. who are college-educated but are unemployed or significantly underemployed. In their home countries they were engineers, doctors, scientists, accountants, and nonprofit professionals. In the U.S. they become cashiers, nannies, and cab drivers, if employed at all.

To solve this problem Upwardly Global creates employer partnerships that benefit from access to this talent pool. They also provide customized training and support for these new Americans to give them an equal opportunity to find and secure skill appropriate opportunities and achieve their full economic potential in the U.S. The outcome is global talent for employers, culturally competent service providers for diverse communities, and family sustaining incomes for those who were previously unemployed or underemployed.

Join YANA to hear about Upwardly Global's impact and to discuss their current areas of focus, and feel free to stay for a 30 minute YANA chapter meeting afterwards.

Location: Gibson Dunn
555 Mission Street, 30th Floor, San Francisco

Volunteering with the CommunityGrows -  Saturday October 14, 11a-2p

CommunityGrows cultivates healthy youth through growing gardens in low-income, diverse communities. We teach gardening, cooking, and healthy living to our youth, providing them with amazing outdoor experiences. Koshland Learning Garden is the true representation of a community space. Through community activism,  neighbors activated a learning garden in Koshland Park in 1993.  For the last 24 years, neighbors, schools, and youth groups come to create a garden where the community can come together, learn, and relax.

Over 150 youth come to the garden each week to learn about environmental education.   Come out to help us maintain these beautiful and peaceful spaces for our youth!

What to bring: water, wear closed toed shoes, dress in layers for the SF microclimates.

Location
Koshland Park & Garden (corner of Page St & Buchanan St in SF)
The garden is located in the back of the park behind the white picket fence
