New SafeZone training dates introduced

SafeZone is a training opportunity that is an important part of making campus feel like a safe community. The purpose of the SafeZone program is to provide the campus "safe zones" and/or visible resources where students can safely go for support and assistance. By placing the SafeZone symbol on an office door, desk, or backpack, SafeZone allies signify that their space is a safe place for students who have been affected by an issue (examples: LGBTQ+ issues, hateful acts, sexual violence, domestic violence, veterans transition to college, disability, etc).

The Safe Zone program is open to anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge about local resources and current issues and trends relevant to the K-State Community. Although becoming an ally is encouraged, being an ally is not necessary to attend any Introductory or Topic Specific Trainings. All Safe Zone events are free and open to the public for the education of our community.

SafeZone training sessions:
  • Tuesday, October 25, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m: Introductory Training, TC118
  • Thursday, October 27, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m: Advanced Training - Domestic Violence Awareness, Aero 141
  • Wednesday, November 9, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m: Advanced Training - Perspectives on Serving Veteran Students, College Center Conference Room

If you are interested in becoming an ally on campus, please email Chris Bugyi at [email protected]. If you have any questions at all, please contact us! http://polytechnic.k-state.edu/safezone

Blood drive contributions could save three lives

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. On average, the Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations every day to keep up. That's EVERY day, all year long!

Kansas State Polytechnic will be holding a blood drive for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Please consider donating blood because your generosity could save three people's lives.

The blood drive will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 and Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Tech Center lobby area near the soda and candy machines. Sign-up sheets are in the Library so that you can reserve an appointment.

If you donate, please:
  • Drink extra fluids the day of and the day before donating
  • Be sure to eat the day of the donation
  • Bring a picture ID and your Red Cross ID if you have donated before
* One thing to be aware of, if you gave on Thursday of the last blood drive you will need to wait until Thursday of this blood drive. Red Cross requires a period of 8 weeks between blood donations.
Seeking interview clothing donations for career closet

Kansas State Polytechnic Career Services are attempting to ramp up the career closet on campus.

For those unfamiliar with what that is, a career closet is simply business type clothing that students could borrow for interviewing and networking events. We are looking for suits, sport coats, ties, dresses, skirts, dress pants, shoes, scarves; anything that would be appropriate attire for an interview. Many of our students have not yet invested in business type clothing and it would be very helpful to them if they could instead borrow until they get out and start making money to buy that type of wardrobe.

If you have business clothes that you would like to donate, contact Julie Rowe at [email protected] to arrange a pickup, or you can deliver them to Julie's office in College Center 208.
Project management certification exam prep class

Wichita PMP Certified Professionals will help prepare you for either the CAPM or PMP Certification with the Velociteach PMP Certification Training Program.

PMP/CAPM certification is the gold standard of project management certification. The PMP/CAPM validates your competence to perform in the role of a project manager, leading, and directing projects and teams.

The course will be offered on November 5, 12, and 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Salina.

For more information, contact Kirsten Zoller at [email protected]

Upward Bound trick-or-treating for local food bank
Make this Halloween more about serving instead of scaring.

The Upward Bound program at Kansas State Polytechnic is helping the local food bank with a trick-or-treat event and is looking for volunteers.

Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat will be held Saturday, Oct. 22,  from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed to go door-to-door in local neighborhoods, and instead of filling bags with candy, participants will collect canned and non-perishable food items for the Salina Emergency Food Bank.

If you would like to be a part of helping feed the hungry this Halloween, or have any questions, please contact  Monshonda Booker at [email protected]
Textron Aviation makes $150,000 gift to Kansas State Polytechnic

Kansas State Polytechnic received a $150,000 donation from Textron Aviation last week, further strengthening the two entities' relationship and enabling the campus to modernize sections of the flight center.

Because of Textron Aviation's generosity, Kansas State Polytechnic will be able to dramatically increase the square footage of the Certified Flight Instructor, or CFI Lab, creating more workspace for flight instructors and a better learning environment for students enrolled in the program.

The Powercat logo was also featured on the hood of the Textron Aviation NASCAR for the Sprint Cup race this past Sunday at the Kansas Speedway - another example of Textron Aviation's continued support for the university.

Flight Team departs for regional competition

Kansas State Polytechnic's Flight Team is currently competing at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's SAFECON regional and will find out at the end of the week if they advance to Nationals in May.

Held in Norman, Oklahoma, the flight team will go up against several schools in their "region," which include Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska universities. They will battle it out in a series of competitions, including  navigation, accuracy landing, and aircraft recognition. The top three teams from the region get to go on to Nationals in Ohio.

Three years ago, the flight team won regionals and took home the prestigious Loening Trophy at Nationals.
McArthur Award winner Raju Dandu provides students with professional knowledge, global life lessons

Engineering Technology professor Raju Dandu, who has been a faculty member on the Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus for almost 20 years, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Rex McArthur Family Faculty Fellow Award.

Dandu was chosen for the honor because of his leadership in several national engineering organizations and his involvement with the local engineering industry; but his selection is primarily because of the experience he provides his students, which is a mixture of professional knowledge and practical life lessons.

Dandu achieved his education, industry expertise and life experiences through years of adventure and travel, effectively making him a citizen of the world. Dandu earned a polytechnic degree in India, his master's degree in Slovakia, and his doctorate in North Dakota. Also, his work has taken him to Libya and Puerto Rico.

"In all of my life pursuits and journeys, I have never been fearful of what lies ahead because I know that each new person, place or culture I have encountered is an opportunity for growth, knowledge and understanding," said Dandu, who, through those world travels learned to speak several languages, including Telugu, English, Slovak, Czech, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi. "One of the messages I want to get across to my students is how important it is to be receptive to all life has to offer. Do not be afraid of the future, go into it with an open mind and embrace it."

Thank you faculty, staff and students for embracing October's Civic Luncheon Lecture message
I would like to send a big high-five to all of our faculty, staff and students who attended this month's Civic Luncheon Lecture.

The presentation, given by President Will Jones of Bethany College, covered the very sensitive topic of racism. Not only did the event attract people in droves - more than 150 in attendance - but it also demonstrated that people of diversity can come together, listen and learn. I am very proud of how our campus supported and embraced the very important message of love over hate, with some even writing positive messages in chalk on the sidewalk.

Also, thank you to Greg Stephens for selecting this very timely topic for the Civic Luncheon Lecture.
