A Mighty Leap

Message from
Cass Winner, Director of Extended Programs

Cass Winner
Kangaroos in the wild are known for their mighty leaps, covering between two and nine meters in a single jump.  In camp, most of our Kangaroos are children moving from preschool to kindergarten. That is a big leap too.
Although we prize and support independence in every Montessori environment, there is a huge cha nge between preschool and kindergarten. During the school year in our Primary   classes, kindergartners are working while the preschoolers are napping - coding in the Maker (STEAM) Studio , sharing stories in Writer's Workshop, and getting ready to meet the expectations and the challenges of an elementary classroom in just a few months. They are mentoring the younger children, being leaders in the classroom and on the playground.

Kangaroo camp is meant to be a bridge to that leadership year. Campers are coming together with children from other classes and other schools, children they might have seen on the playground but not known well, and they are building a community. They are working out their differences, using their words, choosing work together with friends and sliding down the water slide with the big kids. The social curriculum is the focus of camp. At least, it is for the adults! For the children, the focus is fun.

The biggest change is going to the pool. To get there, we walk through the woods on a dirt footpath. The trees on either side soar far above our heads, there are labels on many of the trees telling us what kind of trees they are, and we pass the WMS outdoor stage, built by parents 20 years ago and cared for by many families since.

We see animal tracks - and, sometimes, animals! - in the soft sand by the creek, and sometimes our shoes get stuck in the mud. We cross the creek, stepping from stone to stone and sometimes slipping into the shallow water with a splash. It's a six or seven-minute walk for an adult, but with 15 kindergartners, sometimes it takes 20.

But at the other end of the trail is the Holy Grail of camp activities: the pool! The cool, sparkling water is the reward for all of the effort spent getting there. On Wednesdays, some campers stay for a picnic lunch and swim lessons, eager to pass the swim test and keep up with older friends.

On the way back from the pool, campers regale one another with stories of their aquatic adventures, arguing over details and laughing at remembered jokes.  Ahead of them on the trail are the Tigers and the Meerkats, who will clear any real obstacles, and behind them are the Dragons, the oldest campers, who bring up the rear to make sure that the smallest hikers are safe.

Camp and life are journeys that we are taking together. No matter how old we are, we are lucky to have such good friends along the way.

Preschoolers Bloom at Camp Montessori
by Cass Winner, Director of Extended Programs

The Panda group is studying botany this summer, growing vegetables in their garden, making art from materials they find in the woods, and learning the names of the parts of each plant. This study is rich in sensory detail - different shapes, colors, smells and tastes!

While they study botany, though, they are also studying something that is at least as important. They are learning to conduct themselves in the world beyond their families. As adults, we know that grace and courtesy make life better: saying please and thank you, politely offering, accepting or declining invitations, and helping others whenever we can.

Montessori classrooms begin work on these skills in the toddler classrooms, but it is in the  Primary Program that you can really see them bloom. In the Panda group, children serve snack to one another. "Would you like one?" The response is either, "yes, please," or "no, thank you." We wait until everyone has their snack before we say our special poem and begin to eat.

Is that difficult, at first? Of course! But the children love their rituals and traditions. They love knowing what to expect and what to say, and parents love seeing that their children have the skills needed to participate in dinners out, parties and other special events.

During the course of each day, there are many opportunities for children to help one another.  If Josh can't open his Play-Doh, a friend can help! If Amy is here for the first time, Annie can show her where her lunch box belongs or where to find a spoon. If Alan struggles to roll up his work mat, he doesn't need a teacher to take care of it. Alice will be happy to help him, to share the skill that she has worked on, herself, for weeks. This not only gives the children practice in positive social interaction but also supports their pride in caring for the classroom and camp environment.

Teachers and parents know that the ideal environment for children is one that is predictable enough that children feel safe, but offers developmentally-appropriate challenges and novel activities to explore. The Pandas have all that, and more.
The Wednesday Weekly shares WMS news and events that are relevant to the families in our community.
