Provost's Message

Dear Colleagues:

Please join me in thanking Sharon Hilles for her four years of service as Dean for the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. Dean Hilles came to Cal Poly Pomona as an assistant professor of English and Foreign Languages in 1990, she became Associate Dean in 2006, served as Interim Dean in 2011 and was officially named Dean of the College in 2013. I have appreciated her vision, leadership and dedication to engage people and ideas in a thoughtful way.

In keeping with Dr. Hilles' wishes, there will not be a retirement event. In lieu of an event, if you wish to acknowledge Dr. Hilles' service to the College, you are invited to make a donation to a project that is near and dear to her heart, the proposed California Center for Ethics and Policy. The proposed initiative has its own account called "The Blumner Project." Donations can be made directly to the College, honoring Sharon, with a designation for the project. Checks can be written to CPP Foundation, in the memo line write Blumner Project, for any questions please contact Vanessa Franco 909-869-3948. Thank you for your support.

Interim Dean Iris Levine

With strong support from Dean Hilles and the department chairs, Dr. Iris

Levine, has been appointed as Interim Dean for the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. Her appointment as Interim Dean will begin on August 7. Dr. Levine joined Cal Poly Pomona as assistant professor of music in September 1990. In 2000 she began serving as the music department's interim chair and became the permanent chair shortly thereafter. Beloved by students, but called to service by Dean Hilles, Dr. Levine accepted the role of interim associate dean in 2016. Her 27 years at Cal Poly Pomona and her experiences as department chair and as associate dean have prepared her for the new role of Interim Dean.
