On October 20, Maine Council of Churches hosted an event titled, "From Mudslinging to Mutual Respect: How to Make Politics More Civil" featuring former Maine Senator George Mitchell in his hometown of Waterville as the guest speaker.
Bishop Lane and about 30 Episcopalians from 13 congregations from York Harbor to Calais gathered for the event. Here's an

Clergy and lay delegates from Maine's 60 congregations gathered on Saturday, October 22, for a one-day convention at Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine campus in Portland.
After three ballots to elect nominees to diocesan offices, the annual address from Bishop Steve Lane, passage of a resolution to raise the minimum wage for diocesan employees to $12.00 an hour in 2017, and approval of the 2017 budget, convention-goers departed for home a full hour earlier than planned.

Upcoming in Maine and Beyond
Benefit concert at Trinity, Lewiston, celebrates Bach, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
A string orchestra with harpsichord and oboe will perform the works of Bach at Trinity Church in Lewiston, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The concert is a benefit for the Jubilee Center, in support of its important work in downtown Lewiston.
Works to be performed include the Brandenburg Concerto Number six, featuring viola soloists Greg Boardman and Linda Vaillancourt, accompanied by viola da gamba players Mark Nordberg and Barbara Oliver, cellist Abbie Collette, bassist John Lawson, and John Corrie, harpsichord.
Corrie, choir director at Bates College as well as music director for the Maine Music Society, will perform selections from Bach's Partita Number One for harpsichord.
The celebrated Air for Strings from the Orchestral Suite Number 3 will follow, then oboist Billie Jo Brito and violinist Aaron Pettengill will be joined by strings and harpsichord for the concluding work of the program, the Concerto in C Minor for Oboe, Violin and Orchestra.

Interfaith Forum at St. Paul's, Brunswick, on October 30.
Muslim, Christian and Jewish leaders aim to foster dialogue, religious unity in Maine amid political divisiveness
The forum will feature a full afternoon of discussion about finding "unity in diversity" while honoring differences through respect and listening. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 30,from 1:30 to 5:15 p.m. at St. Paul's, 27 Pleasant St., Brunswick.
Three leaders of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths will lead the community discussion:
Reza Jalali is an Iranian Kurd who is coordinator of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of Southern Maine and serves as Bowdoin College's Muslim chaplain. He also taught Islam at Bangor Theological Seminary and is the author of three books.
Rabbi Carolyn Braun is the long-time leader of Temple Beth El in Portland. Rabbi Braun has been deeply involved in interfaith activities as well as Temple Beth El leadership on issues of progressive Judaism.
Dr. Christopher Leighton is a Presbyterian minister and retired academic who currently serves as executive director of the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore.
The Rev. Bob Patterson, a retired Episcopal minister with decades of experience with interfaith dialogue, will moderate the panel discussion.

Mozart's Requiem mass at St. John's, Bangor, to mark All Souls Day
On Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m., Bangor's St. John's Episcopal Church Choir will sing W.A. Mozart's historic setting of the Requiem in the context of a Solemn Eucharist for All Souls' Day at the church, 225 French Street in Bangor.
Requiem was Mozart's final composition and was, in fact, unfinished at the time of the great composer's death in 1791.
The additional liturgical texts of the service not set by Mozart will be sung to traditional Gregorian chant.

Join us at Christ Episcopal Church, Norway, for a day of quiet meditation or prayer, an opportunity to refocus your heart, mind and soul from all the busy-ness of this fall season and prepare to enter into the holy seasons of Advent and Christmas with a peaceful, open and joyful spirit. The day will include opportunities to learn some new prayer/meditation practices or simply take the time to shut out all distractions and be still. Lunch will be provided (donations accepted to offset the cost).
