Did you know?

The history of Magnetics' logo:  The hysteresis loop is the fundamental basic measurment of a soft magnetic material.  It indicates the permeability, maximum flux density and power losses of the material.

Three hysteresis loops were incorporated in the logo - one for each of the company founders: Arthur O. Black, Edgar V. Weir, and Edward A. Gaugler.

Welcome to "In the Loop". This issue spotlights Technical Manager Donna Kepcia's PCIM 2015 Presentation on Designs for High Current Applications, I n Memoriam for Electro Radio's Alessandro Alessandri,   ou r All Products Bulletin, and Large MPP and High Flux Toroids.
Achieve Energy-Efficient, Compact, High-Current Inductors

Over the past few years the need for soft magnetic materials that can handle higher currents 100 - 300 amps and higher and maintain inductance has increased.  Applications for high current inductors include Solar Power Conversion, UPS systems, Hybrid & Electric Vehicles, Wind Power Conversion, Transportation, Three-phase chokes and Large output chokes.

Magnetics has found that on many high-current applications, the limiting factor was not necessarily the ability of the material to provide enough inductance at DC Bias, it was the ability to fit in enough turns of the heavy wire or foil to provide the necessary inductance.  To address that need, Magnetics tooled up a family of larger shapes that are able to accommodate larger wire sizes and amounts of wire.

Powder Cores for High Current Applications

Kool Mu/XFLUX Toroids - 62, 74, 102, 133, 165 mm
Kool Mu E and U Cores - 65 -160 mm
Kool Mu and XFLUX Blocks - Create custom shapes

Examining the various constraints; frequency of operation, allowable temperature rise, cost, size and weight, geometry, and conductor type; can direct a designer to one material being better than the other materials.

The table below is a comparison of the distributed gap powder core materials that are available to construct inductors.
For design examples from 50 - 300 Amps that compare cost and efficiency of the popular powder materials in powder inductor applications, please refer to Magnetics Technical Sales Manager Donna Kepcia's presentation  Designs for High Current Applications .

In Memoriam

Magnetics' long time distributor and friend, Alessandro (Alex) Alessandri, recently passed away. He was a partner in Electro Radio Ind E Com Ltda, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Alex was a valued partner of Magnetics for over 20 years. He provided a high level of professional service, and was very well liked and respected by his many customers and suppliers.

Alex was experienced in many areas of electronics. Having started with Electro Radio when he was very young, he was a pioneer in the electronics industry before there was an electronics industry.  He offered a unique and valuable perspective having witnessed technology evolve over his decades of service.  He spoke of tuning pot core inductors with cat whiskers in his early years and was interested in wireless charging and renewable energy applications in his later years.

Our condolences to his family.  Alex's son, Ivan, works for RichardsonRFPD, An Arrow Company, the Magnetics distributor in Brazil.
