November is a terrific month at the Museum, highlighted by the opening of Art and Resolution, 1900 to Today, a new exhibition of modern and contemporary work that probes artists' engagement with social and political conflict. Be sure to join us on November 15 when celebrated Israeli photographer Adi Nes visits campus to deliver the Harry Spindel Memorial Lecture. He will be at the Museum the following day to speak further about Art and Resolution, which includes a special installation of his work. See the calendar below for a full listing of this month's programs. We are also excited about the opening on November 3 of Where Do I Go from Here? Snapshots of Twentieth-Century Life, a new Becker Gallery exhibition of recently-donated vernacular photographs curated by Estefania Chavez-Flores '17. See you at the Museum!

Where Do I Go From Here? Snapshots of Twentieth-Century Life

Opening November 3, 2016

Featuring a selection of American vernacular photographs recently donated to the Museum by New York collector Peter Cohen, this exhibition explores how amateur photographers circumvented and at times unsettled assumptions about what a portrait might be. It also demonstrates how subjects established and experimented with their sense of identity through photography.

Artist Adi Nes Visits Bowdoin

Opening November 15, the work of acclaimed Israeli photographer Adi Nes will be exhibited as part of Art and Resolution: 1900 to Today. Based in Tel Aviv, Nes (born 1966) creates large-scale color photographs that imply fictional narratives with factual undertones. Four works from the series
The Village present various tableaux depicting a utopian kibbutz  that bears subtle traces of military occupation. They are at once nostalgic and tragic.

Collectors' Collaborative Acquisition

We are delighted to announce the Museum's recent acquisition of a striking hologram self-portrait by the Dutch artist Folkert de Jong, When H2 leaves O (2015). The work comes to the BCMA through the generosity of the Collectors Collaborative, a group of Bowdoin graduates who meet twice a year in New York to look at contemporary art.

Interview with Steff Chávez-Flores

Steff Chávez-Flores '17 is majoring in Government & Legal Studies and Art History at Bowdoin. Steff spent last summer at the Museum as a Curatorial Fellow and Museum Education Assistant. As a Curatorial Fellow, she developed an exhibition of vernacular photography that opens on November 3.
