Dear Friends,

Fall is here and things are in full swing at History Park. Recently we held our annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to thank our amazing volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering at History Park for more than 30 years! See more images from the event here. This year we paid special recognition to John Zielinski, for contributing his time and talent repairs and improvements to History Park's facilities.

Again, we would like to give a big 'THANK YOU' to all of our fantastic volunteers for their service, devotion and commitment to History San José. None of the work we do would be possible without you!

Empire Firehouse Update

Work continues on History Park's Empire Firehouse to transform it into a brand new interactive exhibit space. Recently several historic fire vehicles from the San Jose Fire Museum were moved into the space, including a Hand Drawn Chemical Fire Cart, c.1890, and a Hand Drawn Hose Cart, c.1880 - both restored by HSJ Volunteers. Work has just begun on installing large scale photo murals in the space. The one seen here features an image, c.1885, of a fire station formerly located on North Market Street with horse-drawn engines and firefighters standing in front. Stay tuned for more updates!

Museum Mysteries - What is that?!

Can you guess what this object is or what it was used for? Email your responses to  [email protected] , and one lucky person with the correct response will win a special prize  courtesy of History San José!  We'll post the answer in next month's  newsletter .

 Last Month's Object
Did you figure out what last month's artifact was? If you guessed fire extinguisher , you are correct. This was World War II Civil Defense fire extinguisher. Papers accompanying this object stated, "Early in our entry into WWII, the West Coast was concerned about attack and bombing from Japan. A program of blackouts and block wardens and assistants were instituted. To combat possible fires, Civilian Defense issued water pump fire extinguishers to wardens and assistants. These were kept in the wardens' side yards at the ready for several years. After the war, the extinguishers were not collected and remained in case of need. This extinguisher found further use in the San Antonio Valley East of Mt. Hamilton for many years. It was used to fight a wild land fire in 1952."
