 COMPOST  CORNER

Q.   What do we do w/ pliable containers like this one once they're empty?

A.  We can't recycle soft plastic lotion tubes, so they need to go in the trash. The more rigid lotion, soap and shampoo bottles/containers can be recycled, however.  Also, on the topic of bathroom recycling - don't forget to recycle paper towel and toilet paper tubes, soap boxes, and other paper and rigid plastic packaging from toiletry items.

Johnson & Johnson has actually put together a pretty good website with bathroom recycling tips, since people often neglect to recycle items generated in the bathroom.

You can also put a small compost container in the bathroom to collect tissues, wet paper, hair, cotton swaps, compostable wipes and other compostable materials. (It may go without saying, but we can't take items with poop or blood. That needs to go down the toilet or in the trash, depending on the item.)

The Choices We Make

Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action  by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good fit, that is to say  compatible with your interests and abilities.

Say a fond good-bye to this year's Farmers' Market at their final outing of the season. But say hello to many of this  year's participating nonprofits in CanDo's 2016 Napa Valley Give!Guide.  Learn more about what they do and what you can do to help our communities thrive. Copies of this year's G!G catalogs will arrive in your mailboxes beginning Oct. 29 as an insert in MarketPlace magazine, but we'll have extras to share at the Market.

Wear costumes. Win prizes. Hear local musicians playing foot-tapping tunes. Help one lucky nonprofit earn a $100 donation from the  Give!Guide  Team. It will go  to the nonprofit meeting and greeting the most visitors and will be issued  as soon as the Give!Guide campaign launches on-line at midnight, November 1st.

It turns out that the solutions to America's most entrenched problems already exist elsewhere in the world.
