A Generous Corporate Neighbor

The QuikTrip Employee Contributions Committee visited the Community Service Council last week to learn more about the impact CSC is making in the community. Laura Ross-White and Kevin Burr, CEO were surprised with a generous contribution to CSC during the meeting. Thank you to our partners at QuikTrip!
Youthful Drunk Driving (YDD) Program

Participants are required to attend 4 classes in the YDD Program. One class is the Emergency Room visit at St John's Hospital. In the past, the participants would go to the ER on a weekend late at night to sit and observe whatever might come in. However, it was brought to our attention we needed to re-visit this class and verify compliance with the HIPAA laws. A conference was called to bring together the hospital staff, CSC personnel, and legal representation. Upon learning we needed to re-structure the class, the nursing staff not only took the lead to create a new program, but they agreed to have it done in 2 weeks! A follow up meeting was scheduled and the nursing staff gave us a presentation of what they had created for the new class.

The first class was held October 6th and was attended by 13 students. The nurse gave a power point presentation regarding the effects that alcohol/drugs have on the body, as well as statistics, etc. Then the participants viewed a film of DUI accidents, including victims and suspected drunk drivers, which allowed them to see the effects it has on everyone, including parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends.  On the way to visit the Trauma Room, we passed a drunk driving victim brought into the ER at 10:30 in the morning!  The nurse explained how accident victims are brought to the Trauma Room and that all of their clothes are removed so they can check for injuries and do whatever they need to do to save their life. She also explained there could be up to 30 staff in the Trauma Room at a time. The last stop was the Viewing Room, which is where the family is taken to view their dead loved one through a locked glass window lying on a gurney in an adjoining room. The body is brought in "as is" from the accident and is not cleaned up since the investigation by the medical examiner is not complete. This is how the family will view their loved one.
CSC Leaders Keep Ahead of the Learning Curve

CSC Board Member Teresa Burkett and Kevin Burr, CEO were part of a group of Tulsa's leadership that traveled to Cincinnati recently, taking a tour of downtown that had officials marking similarities and lamenting several contrasts. The three-day "What's Next" intercity visit, hosted by the Tulsa Regional Chamber, is the group's seventh annual trip. Every city the group has visited has had unique features that are successful, and Tulsa's leaders educate themselves on best practices
and what works.

ONA Award

CSC's Jan Figart has been selected for the 2016 Nursing Impact on Public Policy award by the Oklahoma Nurses Association (ONA). This recognition honors the ONA member who has developed an innovative, unique and creative approach utilizing nursing theory, knowledge and skills in any practice setting: Administration, Education, and/or Direct Patient Care. Jan will be recognized October 21st at the Hyatt Regency in Tulsa by peers as a role model of consistently high quality nursing practice and as one who enhances the image of professional nursing.
Guest Reader

Kevin Burr, CEO made a special appearance at Union's Roy Clark Elementary as the guest reader at our "Baby Book Club," held throughout the year to promote early literacy to Latino families with children ages birth - 6. The event is coordinated by CSC's Power of Families Project. Kevin sat cross-legged with the kids to read Curious George, handed out certificates to the families, and enjoyed cake and conversation with participants afterward.
Disney Success

CSC Promotoras coordinated and delivered a hugely successful Health Fair at Disney Elementary School on October 15. Christina Starzl and Paige Whalen al ong with their team-members gathered health providers and programs, to help our Tulsa Latino Community.   Christina said that when she arrived for set-up at 6: 30 a.m. the line had already stretched around the building and is confident that we served a great number of individuals who needed assistance.
A Healthy Start

Jan Figart will present a webinar on October 25, "Improving the Health of Women, Children and Men: A Primer on Preventive Services Covered Under the Affordable Care Act" for Healthy Start. Healthy Start programs are an invaluable resource for women, children and men to increase their understanding of the preventive services covered under the Affordable Care Act. For example, did you know that comprehensive breastfeeding support and counseling from trained providers, and access to breastfeeding supplies, for pregnant and nursing women is a covered benefit under Marketplace health plans at no charge to the client? This webinar will provide an overview of the preventive services that are covered for women, children and men. Given the substantial amount of content to cover the webinar has been divided up into three parts. The first webinar will be live. The two subsequent webinars will be recorded and available for listening shortly following the live webinar.

T he Community Service Council's mission is to provide leadership for community-based planning and mobilization of resources to best meet health and human service needs.

The Community Service Council (CSC) provides leadership for planning and mobilizing efforts that improve the lives of thousands of Oklahomans each day. Since 1941 we have been bringing people together to research, plan, coordinate and mobilize action, and assess progress towards addressing some of our most critical social service, health, education and civic challenges. CSC also facilitates early access to help through varied information services.

Many people know the Council best for the community issues we address, and our many community initiatives.

Our commitment is to prevention -- strategies that invest in individuals and families across the lifespan to better care for themselves, their families, and our community.
