A Glimpse of Our Diverse Learning Environments
Everyone continues to marvel at how 21st century classrooms look different. Meeting learners where they are, with a vast array of learning stations and techniques, is a challenge for today's teachers. Providing multiple styles of spaces, workstations and pathways to information is imperative to student success. Most adults remember classrooms that were very traditional. Desks and chairs were kept in neat rows and we were taught at an early age to keep our hands and feet within our own space.

It isn't exactly the "good old days" anymore. A thirty minute walk through the hallways of our school district gives you a glimpse of the diverse learning environment available to today's students. Since most of our readers can't walk the halls of our schools, take a look at our virtual "walk through" to you can see how our teachers are meeting our students where they are and providing the best learning environment possible.

Flipping the Role - When Teachers Become the Students
As parents well know, Columbus Day was a day off for students. Likewise, many government offices and services were closed for the day. At Brookville Schools, Monday, October 10 was what teaching staff refers to as 'In Service Day'. This is a day when classroom teachers and administrators have the opportunity to receive professional development around their chosen craft. Director of Curriculum, Professional Development and Instructional Technology, Mrs. Amy Anyanwu saw the day as a great benefit.  "I cannot say enough about how well the in-service day went," she reported.  "Things are moving in a positive direction!"

PK-3 staff spent part of the day learning how to help students by using reflective feedback and critiquing in the elementary classroom. Learning this at an early age will build continuity in practice across the district. The elementary staff also spent time on vertically connecting writing skills across the grade levels and career awareness opportunities for young students.

The BIS staff covered topics such as Mastery Learning, particularly through an assessment cycle, Google Classroom (technology), IEP compliance regulations, and technology tools for formatively assessing non-fiction writing. An exciting part of the Intermediate school professional development was seeing in-house staff provide training and support to their peers.

Finally, Mrs. Anyanwu herself conducted training at BHS on the 8 essential elements in high quality projects in the high school classroom. Our teachers worked as teams to evaluate Project Based Learning best practices.

Such in-service days are imperative to the growth of our classroom leaders. Growing leaders grow organizations. Complacency and stagnation are detrimental to any group. We appreciate the effort given by all staff toward being lifelong learners.

Fire Prevention Parade Comes to the Rescue
With heavy afternoon showers and an iffy weather forecast, the Homecoming Parade scheduled for September 28, had to be cancelled. While everyone realized the situation many were understandably disappointed. After all, there isn't much that's more fun than being part of a parade.

However, living up to their life's mission, the Brookville Firemen came to the rescue. Exactly one week after the cancelled Homecoming Parade, the Brookville Fire Prevention Parade took place. Fire Chief Ron Fletcher graciously extended an invitation that if anyone who had been scheduled for the Homecoming Parade wanted to participate in the Fire Prevention Parade they were welcome. BHS Homecoming court attendants, the marching band, cheerleaders, athletic teams, FFA members and numerous others jumped at the opportunity. Not only were we able to celebrate homecoming and our teams and groups, it also allowed for a great kick-off to our 'Pink Out' Friday night football game.

Following the parade and fire prevention activities, the students held their bonfire pep rally that was cancelled the week before. The topper to the activities was a great win on Friday night. Students and community members came dressed in pink and school representatives provided a check for $11,500 to Mrs. Gale Colston, the host of the Annual Brookville Breast Cancer Walk. The evening ended on a perfect note when our Blue Devils upended a very strong Milton Union team 28-19. You can see a gallery from the parade and bonfire here.

Thank You Chief Fletcher and Brookville Fire Department!

Fall Sports Are Wrapping Up
Fall seasons are coming to end and tournament play is either in process or just around the corner.  We wish all of our athletes the best as their schedules near an end.  Here is a thumbnail sketch of where things stand.

Boys Soccer - The regular season has ended with the Blue Devils just a tad under the .500 mark. Despite this, and because of playing such a strong schedule, the team gained home field advantage in the sectional tournament. We begin tournament play this evening at home against Dixie at 7 p.m.  If the boys win they will host Jackson Center. Because of the home football game Thursday night, Jackson Center has agreed that if this scenario occurs the game will be played on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m.

Girls Soccer - With the regular season completed the girls' will travel to Troy Christian on Tuesday, October 18, to open sectional play at 7 p.m.

Cross Country -   Both cross country teams (boys & girls) have enjoyed ultra successful seasons.  Both as individuals and as teams they have achieved strong finishes in a number of meets.  This past Saturday the boys finished 4th in the SWBL meet at Franklin and the girls finished 6th. Both squads will travel to Cedarville University Saturday, October 22, to begin down the tournament trail in the sectional meet.

Volleyball - Like others, the volleyball team has completed their regular schedule and opened tournament play this past Saturday with a tough loss to the Bethel Bees.

Girl's Tennis - The tennis team also enjoyed a very successful season. The team finished 3rd in the very strong Southwestern Division of the SWBL. Senior Laura Bowen was 1st team all league and junior Grace Rohrer was 2nd team all league. Laura Bowen finished 2nd in the sectional tournament and proudly represented BHS at the District Division II Tournament.

Boy's Golf - The Blue Devils finished 5th in the SWBL and senior Blake Mullennix earned 2nd team all league honors. Blake also advanced out of the sectional tournament and represented the Blue Devils at the District Tournament in Cincinnati.

Football -   The football team currently has a 5-3 record after a nice win at Eaton last Friday night. The Blue Devils wrap up the season with a televised Thursday Night Lights game at home against Valley View this week, and a final home game and senior night celebration versus Franklin on October 28. We encourage you to come out and support the boys in these last two home games.
Manufacturing Day
A focus on career connections is one of the district instructional practices goals this year. On Friday, October 7 high school guidance counselor Mrs. Spangler made a real career connection for about 40 juniors and seniors by taking them to visit three manufacturing sites. The companies involved were BasTech, Production Tube Cutting and Starwin Industries. "Manufacturing Day" is a national event and was sponsored locally by the Dayton Region Manufacturing Association.

The primary purpose of this day was to educate students nearing their graduation about the tremendous job and career opportunities in manufacturing. Students were given a first hand look at the fact that these manufacturing jobs are not the sweat shop labor positions that they read about during the industrial revolution.  Instead they are challenging, high-tech, engaging careers that can be found right here in the Miami Valley.

Management in these manufacturing plants pointed out that if you are willing to come to work everyday, stay drug free, show a willingness to learn and bring a positive attitude, many viable jobs are available. Each plant had advancement opportunities and avenues for success. BHS students in attendance enjoyed Manufacturing Day and learning about this potential career path.
