FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear  (Contact First Name),

There is a Hebrew phrase about beginnings, Kol Hatchalot Kashot - It is always difficult to start. As this year began, I was ready to face challenges head-on, and I still am. But I am pleased to write my first post for Kol Schechter at the beginning of the 5778 school year and let you know that it has been a wonderfully smooth start to the year.

Our Kindergarten, 6th Grade and New Family Orientations, supported new students and parents in their transition into SSLI. The smiling faces on these new students show just how happy they are in their new school.  The High School Retreat is completing its final day at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires and I can't think of a more fun way for these teens to start the school year than heading to camp with their friends and their faculty. But while the high schoolers are still at play, classes have started in earnest in K-8, and I love the sounds I hear from the hallways - 1st graders singing their tefillot with spirit; 8th graders working in pairs in Earth Science to discover the qualities of different rocks; 6th graders debating the value of settling the Land of Israel in Parashat Hashavua.

As parents, we have made a choice to raise our children in a loving community, filled with Jewish values, that inspires them to strive to achieve their very best. I am certain that the year ahead will be filled with blessings for the students, families and extended Schechter community.

I could not be more proud to be the President of the Schechter School of Long Island.

Shabbat Shalom,
Laleh Mourtil, Board President
Schechter School of Long Island

Friday Letter: News from the Lower School
From:Sandi Swerdloff, SSLI Lower School Principal

Excerpt from  Friday, September 8th  Letter:
" As principal of the Schechter Lower School, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another great year of learning. After working and preparing all summer for the first day of 2017, we are all excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our goal to help every child feel welcomed, connected and a part of the Schechter family.

As the buses began to pull up to the front entrance, the children greeted us with their bright smiling faces and it was evident to see how happy everyone was to be back at what they often refer to as their "second home"... Click here to continue reading.

Friday Letter: News from the Upper School
From: Ofra Hiltzik SSLI, Upper School Principal

Excerpt from  Friday, September 8th  Letter:

"What a Spiritually Nourishing First Week We Had!

Welcomes were in abundance, echoing an ongoing theme we as educators will weave into our classes this year-welcoming the "stranger" into our midst. Of course, in our case we have no strangers, but we do have new, younger students who need to feel the warm embrace of older students. Our sixth graders and other students new to our middle school, have already been assorted into their camps-"מחנות," joining the 7th and 8th graders, and it was a pleasure to see the eagerness and generosity displayed by all in the middle school. Our 9th graders were the first to arrive at the high school's 17th retreat at Camp Ramah with their Peer Connectors, who welcomed the new students with wisdom and kindness. The entire retreat was a delight. "... Click here to continue reading.

SSLI HS Student Government and Kesher Club
The SSLI High School Student Government and Kesher Club rallied the SSLI community to give support to Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Our students felt the need to "pay it forward" the kindness we had benefited from. In their words: " It was only five years ago when our SSLI community received an outpouring of love and support from sister Schechter Schools around North America as we coped with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Now it's our turn to reciprocate and support the Houston community in their time of need. The SSLI High School Student Government and Kesher Club are working to collect gift cards from every family of the SSLI community to send to the Beth Yeshurun Day School in Houston, Texas." Through their efforts, we collected close to $2,000. These gift cards were mailed today to the Beth Yeshurun Day School for their use and for distribution to their community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston, as they rebuild for a bright future. (At this time, we are keeping the Caribbean Islands and Florida in our thoughts and prayers and will mobilize our response in the coming week.)
