Time Again for the Drylongso Awards

Since 1989, Community Change Inc. has annually honored the work of ordinary people doing extraordinary work with our racial justice awards: The Drylongso Awards

The Drylongso Awards (which also include the Emerging Leaders and Lifetime Achievement awards) are inspired by the book Drylongso: A Self-Portrait of Black America. In that book, anthropologist John Langston Gwaltney detailed the daily struggles of Drylongso, or ordinary African Americans fighting racism.

This year's award recipients are:

2016 Drylongso Awards
  • Debby Irving, Author/Educator
  • Stewart Lanier, Educator/Activist
2016 Emerging Leaders Awards
  • Black Lives Matter - Cambridge
  • Lori Hurlebaus, Community Activist
Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Lydia Lowe, Chinese Progressive Association (Lydia is also a past Drylongso Award recipient)
While the awards honor the work of people with a deep commitment to justice, they are also a time for Boston's racial justice community (and even the community from the region at large) to come together as one to recharge and connect. This year will be no different in that regard.

We also will have a special guest speaker this year. We are proud to announce that David Billings will be joining us.
David is an educator, organizer and historian who has worked for half a century in the struggle for racial justice. His just-published book, Deep Denial: The Persistence of White Supremacy in United States History and Life, is part popular history and part personal memoir, and it documents the 400-year racialization of the United States and how people of European descent came to be called "white."

Please join us as we come together to celebrate not only this year's award recipients but to gather as a community and celebrate our collective work and humanity.
