Monday Is Picture Day!
Get ready to smile! Monday is Picture Day for everyone at DCD (rain date: 9/26). You can order your child's pictures online at coffeepond.com or fill out the form that went home in backpacks and return it with a check to your child's teacher on Monday. Checks should be made out to Coffee Pond Photography (one check per order form per child). Credit cards are accepted online only. All students will receive a free class photo. 
New Fall EDP Programs Starting Up
The Extended Day Program (EDP) is offering after-school enrichment programs this fall:

Yoga
This class, taught by former DCD parent Marie Nagode, will teach your child yoga poses, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques through a combination of instructor-led sequences, games, music, and positive affirmations.  
 
Who: Students in grades 1-5
When: Tuesdays, September 19-November 21
Time:  3:30-4:30 p.m.
Where: EDP
Cost: $80 (You must register your child for the entire program.)

Registration: Registration is required by Friday, September 15.
 registration form must be completed and signed for each child.

Chess
Chess Wizards is back! This Chess program teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student will have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.
 
Who: Students in  grades 1-5
When: Thursday, September 28-November 9 (7 sessions)
Time: 3:00-4:30 p.m. (starts after snack)
Where: EDP
Cost:  $175 
Registration: Registration is required.  Click here for the registration form

What is Grit Anyway?

DCD faculty members Duane Claussen and Gerry Clifford read the book Grit by Dr. Angela Duckworth in the spring, and the conversations it sparked about teaching and learning led a group of DCD faculty, administrators, and staff to read it together over the summer. This group had a conversation about the book with Dr. Duckworth (who joined us by phone) during our opening faculty and staff meetings. Dr. Duckworth's book summarizes research into "grit," a term she uses to describe the combination of passion and perseverance. Read more...
