Annual Raider Football and Cheer Night
Last week,
Deputy Mayor McCauley, Committeeman DelCore and Committeeman Doug Tomson attended the Raider Football and Cheer Community Night held at Hillsborough High School.
Several hundred people came out for this event held each year to kickoff the season. The event is a great opportunity for the High School Football and Cheer teams to interact with the children in town that participate in youth programs.

Special Needs Children Enjoy A Special Day at the Rotary Fair

An estimated 15,000 people passed through the colorfully lit entryway last week at the Hillsborough Rotary Fair, but no group of attendees was more special to the Rotary Club of Hillsborough members than those who visited on Saturday afternoon's Family Fun Day. Added to their annual Fair in 2012, Family Fun Day is an invitation-only event dedicated to special needs children and their families. Held from 1 to 4 PM, the Fair is closed to the general public so that children with special needs and their immediate family members can enjoy the rides, games and food free of charge.
"We receive wonderful feedback every year from very grateful parents," commented Rotary Club of Hillsborough President, Anthony Franchini, "They tell us how much they enjoy attending an event catering to special needs children, as well as their families."

School is Open - Drive Carefully
Police Chief Darren Powell would like to remind area residents and commuters that Hillsborough Township Schools are now open. Motorists can anticipate an overall increase in traffic volume throughout the Township as school buses take to the streets along with congestion and backups around Township Schools.
Motorists are cautioned to be alert for stopped school buses and increased pedestrian traffic. It is also recommended that motorists plan for a longer commute for the first few days of the school year as everyone gets accustomed to school being back in session.

Being prepared is the key to safety in any emergency situation. Below are some general guidelines and suggested supplies in the event of a weather emergency.
Prepare Your Home

Get your yard or property ready for a hurricane by bringing in all outdoor furniture & securing anything else that isn't tied down.

Be ready to protect appliances from minor flooding. Put a half-block of cement under each corner of refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dryers. Use bricks or boards if you don't have cement blocks.

Prepare your family, home, or business before a disaster strikes. Learn how you can get prepared to lessen the impact of severe tropical weather by visiting:

Preparing a "Go Kit", should you need to evacuate your home is also recommended. Suggested items to include in a "Go Kit" are:

Prescription medications and glasses

Infant formula and diapers

Pet food and extra water for your pet

Cash or traveler's checks and change

Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container.

Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.

Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes.

Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper - When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

CANCER CALLOUT VII 2017

The 7th Annual Nick Magos Cancer Callout will be held on Sunday, September 24th at the Woods Road Firehouse. The Cancer Callout raises money throughout the year with their main event being "The CALLOUT." Each year, the event, named after Nick Magos, one of the founders of the Somerset County SWAT Team who passed away from cancer, is run by SWAT Team members and is designe
d to benefit families who are in need of assistance due to their battle with cancer and or other life threatening illnesses.

Are you or your group or organization looking for service hours? Hillsborough Township often has volunteer/service opportunities and is now maintaining a list of individuals, organizations and groups looking to give back to the community.
The purpose of this initiative is to link those individuals or groups in need of completing service hours with the organizations who have service opportunities.

News From Somerset County

Freeholders to Place Wreath at 9/11 Memorial
Members of the Somerset County Board of Freeholders, led by Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer, will place a wreath at the county's 9/11 memorial at the corner of Main and Bridge streets on Monday, Sept. 11. The public is welcome to attend. As people gather for the ceremony, the Somerset County Police Pipes & Drums band will perform.
At 8:46 a.m. - the time when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center 14 years ago - the ceremony will begin with a brief tolling of the bell at the top of the nearby historic courthouse. The Somerset County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard will present the colors. Senator Christopher (Kip) Bateman also will participate in the ceremony.
The Freeholders will then read the names of the
39 Somerset County residents killed in the attacks. The placement of the wreath will be followed by a moment of silence. A second brief bell-tolling will conclude the ceremony.

Rx Drive-Thru Medicine Drop-off Sept. 16 in Branchburg
Somerset County Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano invites county residents to take advantage of the next Rx Mission Drive-in/Drop-Off Saturday,
Sept. 16,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
at the Branchburg Township Public Works Garage

safely dispose of unwanted or outdated prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.
The Rx Mission Drive-in/Drop-Off is a medicine-collection program sponsored by the Somerset County Sheriff's Office, the Somerset County Solid Waste Management Division and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (USDEA).
The program is held in conjunction with all scheduled Somerset County Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events.
This is a rain or shine event.

Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities
Sept. 25 Program at Manville Library
Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites residents with disabilities, their families and caregivers to attend a free interactive training program on how to prepare for emergencies.
"Emergency Preparedness: What You Should Know" will be held Monday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Manville Library, located at 100 S. 10th Ave. Attendees with disabilities will receive one free disaster kit per household while supplies last.

Do You Have a Plan in Case of an Emergency?
You get ready for a lot of things in life, shouldn't emergencies be one of them? During an emergency, it is easy to feel helpless. The best strategy to handle emergency situations is to prepare for the unexpected to the best of your ability.
If a disaster strikes in your community, you may not have access to food, water or electricity for several days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately half of U.S. adults do not have the resources and plans in place for a potential emergency. Sitting down and developing a communication plan with your family and preparing emergency supply kits can help make emergencies less stressful.
September is National Preparedness Month and a good time to plan with your family what you would need should you have to leave your home or stay at home, also known as sheltering in place, due to a hurricane or another disaster. This year's campaign is titled "Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can." It is a call to action to think ahead and look beyond batteries and flashlights when making emergency preparedness plans for family members and pets.
