Signs, Streets, and Storefronts - A history of Architecture and Graphics Along America's Commercial Corridors.
Treu, Martin.
Baltimore, MD: The Johns Hopkins Univ Press, 2012. First edition. Small quarto, pp 384, indexed. 39 Color photographs of store front facades and streets. b/w photographs throughout the volume. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. New in New DJ. "'Signs, Streets, and Storefronts' addresses more than 200 years of signs and place-marking along America's commercial corridors. From small-town squares to Broadway, State Street, and Wilshire Boulevard, Martin Treu follows design developments into the present and explores issues of historic preservation. Treu considers common architecture and its place-defining business signs as well as influential high-style design examples by taste-making leaders. Combining advertising and architectural history, the book presents a full picture of the commercial landscape, including design adaptations made for motorists and the migration from Main Street to suburbia... Several forces are at work: technological advances, design imagination and the media, corporate propaganda, customer needs, and municipal mandates...  A must-read for city planners, town councils, architects, sign designers, concerned citizens, and anyone who cares about the appearance and vitality of America's commercial streets, this heavily illustrated book is equally appealing to armchair historians, small-town enthusiasts, and lovers of Americana." The exhalation produces first dizziness, and afterwards, in many individuals, vomiting. ...Their (painters) maladies are evidently the result of an impression of the nervous system, through the medium of the membranes of the nostrils and the air-tube.'

This is a scarce and invaluable volume of "Architectural Forum" featuring two distinct portfolios of home designs. The first group (of 15 designs) includes modern, mostly Bauhaus inspired, architect designed houses across the country. Designers include Gropius for his famous house in Lincoln, Massachusetts; Clarence Mayhew, for a modern adaptation of a bungalow in California; and Philip Maher, for his modern interpretation of a Bauhaus styled home in Illinois. The second portfolio is of the house designs in "Town of Tomorrow" from the 1939 World Fair. 0ver a dozen house designs are included with photographs, plans descriptions, and polls of their popularity at the fair. In addition, the journal includes the award winning design by Eliel and Eero Saarinen for the Smithsonian Art Gallery, originally intended to be located across from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall. This design was rejected by a conservative commission. Much later, the Hirshhorn Gallery, designed by Gordon Bunshaft, and I.M. Pei's addition to the National Gallery were built. (18374)    $75.00
