Fun Fact:
In Santiago, it snows about once every ten years...
Snow bunny someone made in front of the church
... a nd THIS was the year!  The freak snowstorm started about 2:30 am Saturday and turned into sleet at about 7:30 am.  We had about 4" in our yard; other places up to 6"!!! Chileans tell us it is unusual to have so much, and for it to stay around.  Many, MANY branches and whole trees were down.  Consequently, we were without power for 48 hrs.
Tree branches down in park across street from church.

P.S. The "winter colors" of this newsletter reflect the fact that although most of you are enjoying summer, we are in mid-winter!

Prayers & Praise
* Thank the Lord for leading us to a house to rent for our new mission outreach in downtown Santiago.
* Pray for guidance as we begin to reach people in the downtown area of Santiago.
* Praise God for all the new GLO missionaries! Six new missionaries are in the process of prep- aring to serve overseas, including our son Ben (Guatemala). Ask God to guide their preparation, fund-raising, and transition to the field.
* Thank the Lord for expanding the GLO family with children:  the Talsmas (Nigeria) welcome a new granddaughter; Joe & Viya Stoltenow (Cambodia) just had a son; Eric & Linda Funke (Tanzania) adopted a daughter!
* Pray for Venezuela.  For the social and  economic turmoil.  For our efforts to assist and show Christian compassion.  For God to have mercy on our dear Venezuelan  brothers and sisters...both those in the country and those immigrating into new countries.
* Ask the Lord to guide us in the selection of teachers and students at Casa Betesda.

One more snow pic - members enjoyed a day of sledding in our youth outing!

"By faith Abraham, when he was called ... went out, not knowing where he was going."
(Hebrews 11:8).

For many, summertime in the USA is a great time for a road trip. There is something wonderful and exciting about piling into the car and heading out "on the road", not knowing exactly what you will see and experience along the way. You know your destination, but a lot of the magic is in the journey.
So it is also with the Christian life. We know the destination, but are often left wondering about what we will encounter around the next bend in the road of life. We came to Chile with some idea of what God was calling us to do, but have often been surprised at how things actually unfold! We share an example of that in this newsletter - the "Venezuelan connection".
If we knew what lies ahead, we wouldn't need faith, would we?
"From Everywhere to Everywhere" -  from Chile to Venezuela (and back!)
God is certainly on the move!  And it keeps us BUSY!
As you know, Jim is the founder and director of Global Lutheran Outreach (GLO), whose vision is to help send missionaries "from everywhere to everywhere". You may also know about the extreme hardship and suffering currently taking place in Venezuela, where we previously served as missionaries (you can watch a good video about that here).  As a result of the situation in Venezuela, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing the country, and many of them are moving to Chile!

Pastor Adrian Ventura and family - from Venezuela to Chile!

God has blessed Global Lutheran Outreach with the opportunity to facilitate the sending of Pastor Adrian Ventura and his family from Venezuela to ConstituciĆ³n, Chile.  Due to serious health problems of one of his daughters, Pastor Adrian has been seeking a place to serve where the medication needed for his daughter is also available.  The Lord has led him to Chile...where we desperately need more pastors!  Currently they are looking for financial support to follow God's call.  Please pray about whether God may want to use you to make this possible.  To find out more about this awesome opportunity check out the Ventura's web page or make a contribution here
A side note: Adrian was just a youth in our church and started his theological education with Jim and the other missionaries when we were in Maturin, Venezuela from 1989- 1992!

From everywhere to everywhere:
Food and Medicine for Venezuela
The Lord has also led us to create two other projects to benefit brothers and sisters in Venezuela.  One is called "Venezuela Relief", which provides food baskets to church members and financial assistance to pastors.  It is easy to give to this project. Only $20 buys a basket of food for four people!  Check it out here, "Venezuela Relief Project". Be sure to look at the
Eating out of the garbage in Venezuela
reports and thank-yous from Venezuelan lutheran brothers and sisters who have benefitted already!
The second effort we have is to facilitate medication for Venezuela. We are running this project in coordination with the Lutheran Church of Chile, and received a grant from Lutheran World Relief that is financing it.  Now we need your prayers for acquiring the requested medicines here in Chile and successfully mailing them to Venezuela.
New Ministry in Santiago!
If you're one of Liisa's facebook friends, you may have become concerned at recent pictures she posted of our "move".  Don't worry; we're still in Chile!  In our May newsletter we requested prayers for the beginning of a new mission in downtown Santiago.  Well, we're doing it!  God has directed us to an old large home in a neighborhood called Providencia.  The plans are to form a "House Church" at this location.
Our new front yard with recent snow (see sidebar).
Together with some church members who live close to this part of Santiago, we will begin to have Bible studies and periodic worship services in the large "living room" of the house.  We will also give regular workshops on topics such as success in migrating to a new country, personal finances, relationships, etc.  Prayerfully, these will generate new contacts that we can invite to our Lutheran house church!
We do continue to participate in the "original" church here, La Cruz de Cristo, in another area of Santiago.  Currently, the public schools are in the midst of their "winter break", so we had a mini-VBS.  About 20 children participated in the theme of "Heroes of the Bible". Also, t he plans for opening the rehab center for the handicapped, Casa Betesda, are getting closer to becoming a reality as well.

We praise God for each of you,  our "mission partners". Our new ministry is underway, thanks be to God! The new ministry means new expenses, as we are no longer working within an established congregation (the congregation paid all of our ministry expenses).
