What a beautiful weather weekend! I hope you and your student had the opportunity to enjoy it.
Last week, October 17-21, was National Digital Citizenship Week and LHS took part in recognizing the event through daily programming. Activities focused on how to be safe, think critically, and participate responsibly in our digital world. Digital literacy skills are essential for students to leverage the full potential of technology for learning, but students need help creating good structures and engaging in good habits.
As a follow up to last week, I want to encourage you to engage in conversations with your student about making great choices in their digital lives, and how to help them be accountable in their use of digital devices. I have included the videos along with a short description of the topics they covered so that you can view them as well.

WSMS Presents Parent Session/ Drug Prevention: October 25

Our Unexpected Journey: Helping You Be Prepared
We would like to share our son Hayden's story and our dark journey through his downward spiral into drug use, addiction and legal issues. Our seemingly perfect family life came to an abrupt end when we found ourselves unprepared and uneducated to manage these issues. We were ashamed, embarrassed, and felt very alone. We lost our sweet beloved son, Hayden, in 2014 just before his 23rd birthday and on our 28th wedding anniversary. Our experience was very unfortunate and one we wish no parent would experience - sadly many will and are today. As Hayden's parents, one way for us to bring some light to this darkness is to tell others of our experience in hopes to provide you with some knowledge how drug abuse can start, what to watch for, and tools to plan and be prepared.

Lovejoy Letter Campaign
We need your help for an upcoming opportunity to let our teachers and staff know how much our Lovejoy ISD community values them and what an impact each one has on our children! The district provides an extra check for teachers the day before Thanksgiving break. In addition to those checks, again this year we would love to include a hand written letter from Lovejoy ISD families expressing gratitude and appreciation to each teacher and staff on your campus. We would be so grateful if you could write a letter or letter(s) to any teacher or teacher(s)/staff, either current or past, that have been valuable to your child(ren)'s educational experience. Please clearly label the envelope with the staff/teacher's name and LLC (Lovejoy Letter Campaign) and return the letter to the lobby receptionist by Friday, November 11th. The letter campaign has become such a meaningful tradition, and we really appreciate the time and effort your contributions will make again to this year's letter campaign.

Lovejoy Quiz Bowl Team Invades Alamo City, Edges St. Stephen's for Title
This weekend, the LHS Quiz Bowl team traveled to San Antonio to participate in the Alamo City VI invitational. There were 19 teams from the San Antonio, Houston, and Austin area plus lone representatives from McAllen and DFW. The LHS team got off to a strong start with dominant wins over teams from Juan Diego and Keystone. Things then got rocky for the LHS quiz bowlers during the next two rounds as they lost hotly contested matches to St. Stephen's and Clark each by just 10 points. The negative momentum culminated in a 3rd straight loss to Strake Jesuit in round 5. However, after a bye and some Domino's pizza for a pick-me-up, the team bounced back with a round 6 win over Brandeis Orange to finish the prelims with a 3-3 record and a #9 seed. Only the top 12 teams made it to the single-elimination championship tournament.
For the LHS team, it all came together in the tournament. Things got rolling with a victory over Brandeis Navy (365-160) followed by an upset of the #1 seed Reagan HS (335-280). After that, it was time to exact revenge for the earlier 10 point defeats during prelims. LHS defeated Clark (375-255) in the semifinals and then bounced back from a 115 pt deficit with six questions remaining to stun St. Stephens (315-295) in the championship match.

The quiz bowl team will be back in action on November 12 when we host the 1st annual "Leopard Lair" invitational. As a reminder, matches are open to spectators.
LHS XC District Meet
The boys team won the district title for the 10th year in a row and also qualified for the regional meet for the 10th year in a row!!!
Grant Tiff lead the way for the Varsity Boys team with a time of 16:04. We had five runners that placed in the top ten earning all-district honors. Brady Laboret placed 3rd overall with a time of 16:26, Brett Pedersen placed 4th overall with a time of 16:27, Bradley Davis placed 8th overall with a time of 16:46, and Ryan Spruell placed 10th overall with a time of 16:53. Ryan Brands just missed the top ten placing 11th with a time of 16:57 and Nate Hartter finished 17th with a time of 17:30.
The JV boys team won the District Title for the 10th year in a row with a total of 19 points! Will Muirhead claimed the individual title with a time of 17:24. Lovejoy had a total of 8 runners in the top 10 for the JV Boys division - Grant Gueller (3rd - 17:38), Michael O'Brien (4th - 17:39), Trevor Joiner (5th - 17:39), Christian Sutter (6th - 17:39), Chayden DuBois (8th - 17:51), Whit Bedell (9th - 17:56), and William Godfrey (10th - 18:00). Our JV team ran exceptionally well on Friday breaking barriers and setting new career personal best times! It was awesome to see some guys break 18 minutes for the first time and crack the 20-minute barrier!

Reflections
We are excited to be kicking off another year of celebrating arts in education with participation in the national PTA REFLECTIONS COMPETITION. All students are encouraged to get in touch with their inner artist by interpreting the 2016-2017 theme: "What Is Your STORY?"
The National PTA Reflections Program encourages students to explore their artistic talents for fun and recognition at the local, council, state and national levels. Students may submit work(s) in:

Musical Composition
Photography
Visual Arts
Participation is a privilege of local PTA membership. One member of the student's primary household must be a current Lovejoy High School PTSA member.

Running Over Depression 5K/1K - Saturday, Oct. 29
Get yourselves signed up for the first ever Running Over Depression 5K/1K at Lovejoy High School! The run follows a certified course and awards will be given out to top 3 overall and age group finishers. Bibs purchased by all 5K runners contain chips that will accurately time your race and provide immediate results. You can either sign up online, at packet pickup, or on race day. Entry fee is $30 for 5K and 20$ for 1K. All preregistered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt. Rudolph Run: December 3/ School Registration Deadline: November 1
The Rudolph Run is one of Allen's most exciting holiday 5Ks and takes place on Main Street in downtown Allen. The event begins with a non-competitive, one-mile run and concludes with the USATF-registered 5K Rudolph Run. Chip timing is used to determine race results of participants. Also, there is an overall male/female Master's division for 50+ winners. This is a family-friendly event open to all ages and skill levels.
You may help a Lovejoy PE department earn money by registering through the Rudolph Run's "School Registration Only" page. For each registration, $5.00 will be donated to the Lovejoy campus (PE department) of your choice.

STAR PARTY: November 7
Puster Elementary, along with the Texas Astronomical Society, will host a star party on November 7th. Viewing will begin at 6:00 PM and end at approximately 9:00 PM. Join us as we explore the stars, moon, planets, the Andromeda Galaxy, and many exciting objects in the Milky Way. Parking will be available in the front lot. You may enter through the front doors where signs will direct you to the courtyard and back parking lot where viewing will take place. Access to the back parking lot will not be available via the driveway. The Puster PTA will provide hot chocolate. In the event the skies are overcast on the 7th, a back-up date of November 11th is planned.

Men's Tailgate Tournament - October 26, 2016
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools is pleased to announce the annual Men's Tailgate Tournament. Join the Foundation for food, beer, and a cornhole tournament. The tournament is double elimination, so everyone is guaranteed to play two games. The event will be held at the home of Chris and Kim Collier in Lucas. Revisiting Diversity: More than a Buzzword: November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars: Diversity. A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning. This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College. She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change. Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes. She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College. She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.
Senior Project Judges Needed
Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits. This school year, we will host four presentation evenings - November 15th, December 7th, January 17th and February 16th.
If you have never judged before, judges training will begin at 5:30 pm in the Lovejoy High School Library. Dinner will be provided. Presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 9:00 p.m. at the latest.

Lovejoy senior Kennedy Miller has taken on the challenge of launching the Lady Leopard Lacrosse program as her 2017 Senior Project. In the event that students need to leave campus during the school day and they drive themselves to school, we will need you to send an email to

. Please include the student's name, the time they need to leave, the reason, and a phone number to be used to contact you. Once we have received the email, we will call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.
Parking for Daytime Events
This is a reminder that we have changed our parking policy in regards to campus events that are scheduled during school hours. Due to the increase in the number of student-assigned parking spots in the back parking lot, we ask that parents park in the front, and we will have a sign-in table just inside the cafeteria.
