Harvey/Irma, DACA and the Code of Ethics
In the last two weeks, we have seen devastating pictures, read horrific stories, and heard frightening reports of what may happen. Whether we are in the eye of the storm (think Sandy) or far from harm's way (think Harvey), whether we are involved in the furor (think Dreamers) or unaffected by policy decisions (think U.S. Citizen), WE ARE SOCIAL WORKERS.
"The NASW Code of Ethics is intended to serve as a guide to the everyday professional conduct of social workers."* It is our road map. It is our rock. It is our light in the darkness.
During hard times, confusing and difficult times, during devastating and horrific and frightening times ~ THIS is when the Code is most important to us.
I encourage you to take a few minutes and look through the Code. Consider the six Core Values of our profession: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.
How do these values guide us during the tumult of the last two weeks and the next few? What can you do to implement these values so that people in trouble, people in distress are better off because of you?
Here are some ideas:

Thanks for all you do ~ during crisis times and when things are calmer. We are all social workers, and we are all in this work together.

DMHAS Transfer: Town Hall Meetings
The DMHAS transfer from the Department of Human Services to the Department of Health officially took
effect last Monday, August 28th. The transition will take place gradually and is
expected to be completed by the end of October.
The DOH and DMHAS have announced a schedule of stakeholder town-hall meetings to be conducted across NJ. These meetings present some of our first opportunities to provide comments and seek more information about the transfer. We urge you to
learn more about this transfer and
register to attend one of these meetings. This transfer introduces increased market insecurity and potentially jeopardizes services in NJ. We need to collectively show our concerns and work together towards a secure transition.
