Jill Homan of Javelin 19 - Bridging the Gap of Real Estate Investing
 CREW DC is excited to have Jill Homan of Javelin 19 for the upcoming September 13th Programs Luncheon to discuss Investing in Real Estate - Bridging the Gap. A long time CREW DC member and past Board of Directors, Jill has been encouraging women in CRE to personally invest in projects and deal opportunities. She will be joined by moderator and Past President of CREW DC, Betsy Karmin of Morris, Manning & Martin LLP, with panelists Latasha Edwards of RSE Capital / Fundrise and Scott Homa of JLL.
Jill formulated the idea for this panel discussion after noticing that the majority of her firm's investors were men. She wondered if women were not interested in investing or were not given the opportunities to do so. After making inquiries, she confirmed that most women were simply not asked to participate or only received access to an opportunity through their husband or male associates. Furthermore, she found that women were very interested in CRE investing but didn't know where to start.
Jill envisions a CRE industry that better utilizes the depth of knowledge and passion women have to offer. She encourages women to apply their own career experience to inform personal investing decisions and tap into their network for information and access. The goal is for women to not only create opportunities but also share deals with each other. If the CRE market makers knew there is a whole marketplace of women doing deals together, then syndicators would seek these women out. That is because people invest with people they know, such as friends, family, or golf buddies. CREW DC members already do this when hiring new firms for specific tasks in their business roles; however, Jill recognizes that strong networking is not translating to personal investing. Why? Because women tend to think that talking about personal finance is intrusive or intimidating.
She hopes luncheon attendees leave with the following takeaway: Commercial real estate investment is a path to wealth creation. CRE investment is just another form of ownership, like stocks or your home. Having a diverse portfolio is more profitable in the long run. So, she will inspire you to use your knowledge to make your money work for you. CRE investment has the potential to provide great returns and is more fun when it is personal. And by directing investments, you get a better understanding of the industry's focus on valuation. She encourages all to think beyond being a service provider but instead being a value creator.

Chapter Dinner During Convention
We hope all CREW DC attendees will attend our chapter dinner at The Grove on
Wednesday, October 25th from 8:30 to 11pm. The restaurant is a 4 minute walk from the Marriott Marquis at 1611 Lamar Street in Houston. Registration will open shortly.

Dressing the Part: Suited for Change and Calvary Women's Services
Several CREW DC members participated in the Dressing the Part event yesterday, September 7th, to help prepare women(re)enter the work force. This included donating accessories, attire, and conducting mock interviews. Colleen Wevodau and Heather Davis from the Community Action Committee (CAC) were in attendance along with Melanie Stehmer-Townsend, Stacy Sklaver, Victoria Abbasi, Cassandra Irby, Suzanne Pye, Debbie Sotzsky, and Adrian Michaelson.Thank you to everyone who participated!

 "Yesterday I had the privilege of volunteering with other CREW DC members at the Calvary Women's Service. This organization offers housing, health, education and employment programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC to change their lives. It was one of the most satisfying and meaningful volunteer experiences I've ever had. The women we worked with were gracious and kind and totally grateful to all the CREW volunteers who spent the morning doing mock interviews to prepare these women for prospective jobs. THANK YOU to Calvary and to CREW for organizing this program - I look forward to volunteering again in the near future.
