In late June I informed Bishop Gutiérrez that effective July 1 I would be stepping down as an assisting bishop for the Diocese of Pennsylvania. My reasons are age (83), some nagging health issues, and the realization that after 13 years of being the Bishop Diocesan of Western Michigan (1989-2002), I have spent 15 years of my official retirement assisting in Pennsylvania. That's 28 years of active episcopacy. They have been wonderful years but the time had come to step aside and embrace a slower pace of retirement.
When Bishop Bennison invited me to assist in 2002, I welcomed the opportunity to serve once again in my diocese of origin. I was born and raised in Fort Washington; baptized, confirmed and ordained to the diaconate in my home parish of St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh; and exercised two priesthood ministries, first at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rittenhouse Square; and then at Temple University. After that and almost 30 years later I found my life and work coming full circle from Michigan to Philadelphia.
Assisting has been a dear privilege. The centerpiece has been Sunday parish visitations, around 20 a year. Baptizing, confirming and receiving is always gratifying for a bishop. And so are the meetings with vestries. For awhile I also coordinated diocesan campus ministries and, with the Commission on Ministry, oversaw the ordination process on behalf of the Standing Committee. These all add up to lots of special time and engagement with good and caring people, clergy and laity alike.
In short, I'm grateful for having had this opportunity to serve and assist.

A finales de junio, le informé al Obispo Gutiérrez mi deseo de retirarme como asistente del Obispo de la Diócesis de Pennsylvania, efectivo el 1ro de julio. Mis razones son, mi edad (83), además de algunas condiciones persistentes de salud y que me he dado cuenta que después de 13 años de ser el Obispo Diocesano de Western Michigan (1989-2002), ya en mi jubilación oficial, he dedicado mi ayuda a Pennsylvania por 15 años. Son 28 años de un episcopado activo. Han sido años maravillosos, pero el tiempo ha llegado de apartarme y abrazar mi jubilación para llevarla a un paso más despacio.
Cuando el Obispo Bennison me invitó a asistirle en el 2002, le di la bienvenida a la oportunidad de servir una vez más en mi diócesis de origen. Nací y fui criado en Fort Washington, fui bautizado, confirmado y ordenado al diaconado en la que fue mi pasada parroquia St. Thomas' Church en Whitemarsh; he ejercido dos ministerios del sacerdocio, primero en la Iglesia Church of The Holy Trinity en Rittenhouse Square, y luego en Temple University. Luego de eso, y casi 30 años después, encontré que mi vida y mi trabajo se convirtieron en un círculo completo entre Michigan y Philadelphia.
Ha sido de gran privilegio ayudarles. La parte central de todo, ha sido las visitas parroquiales los domingos, cerca de 20 visitas al año. Siempre es gratificante para un obispo estar bautizando, confirmando y recibiendo, además de estar en reuniones con las juntas parroquiales. Por un tiempo, también coordiné los ministerios universitarios, y con la Comisión sobre los Ministerios, supervisé el proceso de ordenaciones para el Comité Permanente. Todo esto es la suma de muchos momentos especiales y comprometidos con personas buenas y compresivas del clero y del laicado por igual. En resumen, estoy muy agradecido por haber tenido esta oportunidad de poder servir y ser de ayuda.
