Royals Report
Issue #1/17                                                                                                         September 7,  2017
Principal's Point

Dear SVA Families,

Welcome back to school SVA Royals!  It has been a great start to the year and we look forward to working with you and your child throughout the year.  Our goal is to help make this your child's best school year ever!

Ask your child about the ROYAL Habits lesson and murals.  The students have been learning what it means to be ROYAL (Resilient Leader, Open Communicator, Creative VisionarY, Active Learner, Lifelong Innovator).

During the next few weeks your child will be participating in the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment.
These tests are taken on a computer and given three times per year. MAP determines instructional level and academic growth of your child throughout the year, and from year to year in the areas of Reading and Math.  MAP assessments are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child's level of learning.  As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

A "Summer Bummer Day" celebrating the last day of summer is scheduled for Thursday, September 21st!  Students can wear their summer attire, hats, sunglasses, and flip flops to school!

KTAP Students Community Service Project

Mrs. Neltner's  KTAP students are working on a community service project to collect items for Hurricane Harvey victims.  There are over 50,000 homes which have been destroyed or badly damaged and over 30,000 people living in shelters.  Victims of Hurricane Harvey are living without basic needs!

What You Can Do!
Donate items such as: soaps, shampoo, NEW socks and underwear, can foods, dry goods, water, diapers, etc. Donations will be collected until September 12th!

Drop off items in the bins which are located in the Community Center entrance or Room 220 (6-8 side).

Thank you for your help!

Transportation

Bus Riders   -  If there is a question on the status of a particular bus, parents and guardians can access our new app, My Bus Buddie, which will display the  current status and location of that bus . The School District is providing a mobile app which can be accessed via a smart phone, laptop, or home PC (as long as the device has Internet connectivity and can access the Web). Should the transportation department wish to inform users of a significant delay for a bus or all buses, this app can show the anticipated delay time, i.e. one hour delay due to weather.  Click the link below to find out how to sign up for this app!

Car Riders  - New numbers for car riders are assigned each school year.  If you have a number from last year, please discard the old tag and request a new car rider number from the office for this school year.  Our tags this year are silver, instead of the yellow ones we used last year.  Also, for students in the YMCA/21st Century after/before school program, the numbers the YMCA uses are different than the school, so you will need both if you are have a student participating in that program.

Looking for Stage Crew Members

We are in full swing with our fall musical, "Shrek Jr!".  In order to make our production even better, we need stage crew members.  Students in grades 5-8 interested in being a stage crew member must complete the application and submit to Miss Stapleton by Monday, September 11th.  Click link for application.

K-5 Enrichment Schedule

Classes in grades K-5 participate in enrichment classes (P.E., Computer Lab, Art, Music, STEAM Lab) using an A-E rotation schedule.  Using this type of schedule ensures students receive equal instructional time in all enrichment classes.  Enrichment classes will not be on a specific day of the week.  They will be changing throughout the school year when school is not in session.

Summit View Academy is a School-wide
Title I School  . . . What does this mean?

This program provides financial assistance through state educational agencies (SEAs) to local educational agencies (LEAs) and public schools with high numbers or percentages of low-income children to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic content and student academic achievement standards.
LEAs target the Title I funds they receive to public schools with the highest percentages of children from low-income families. Unless a participating school is operating a schoolwide program, the school must focus Title I services on children who are failing, or most at risk of failing, to meet state academic standards. Schools enrolling at least 40 percent of children from low-income families are eligible to use Title I funds for schoolwide programs designed to upgrade their entire educational programs to improve achievement for all students, particularly the lowest-achieving students.

In school year 2009-10, more than 56,000 public schools across the country used Title I funds to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. For example, funds support extra instruction in reading and mathematics, as well as special preschool, after-school, and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum.  That same year, Title I served more than 21 million children. Of these students, approximately 59 percent were in kindergarten through fifth grade, 21 percent in grades 6-8, 17 percent in grades 9-12, 3 percent in preschool, and less than 1 percent ungraded.

Title I is designed to help students served by the program to achieve proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards. Title I schools with percentages of low-income students of at least 40 percent may use Title I funds, along with other federal, state, and local funds, to operate a "schoolwide program" to upgrade the instructional program for the whole school.  Schoolwide programs must use instructional strategies based on scientifically based research and implement parental involvement activities.
