What a great second week of school! Students are learning new routines and getting into the full swing of things.  Just think....9 days down and only 171 more to go!

There are a few dates of importance coming up including our Back To School Night on Wednesday, September 27th.  We hope everyone will make an effort to attend this informative evening. Also on Thursday, September 28th, students from Springfield College will be joining us for "Humanics in Action" and will be providing a variety of interactive learning activities for SMA students.

And finally, get ready for our annual SMA Walk-a-thon on Friday, October 6th! Information and further details were sent home today in your child's weekly folder. This fun event is one of only two major fundraising events that our school holds so we hope families will make every effort to participate. We have lots of challenges and prizes to award starting with a dress down day to anyone who raises $25 or more. Check out the information sent home today for details!

Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal

From The Classroom of  Mrs. Wozniakowski- Gr. 7

          Welcome Back to Math Class!

St. Michael students hit the ground running during week one in math class.  The week was filled with getting reacquainted with friends, learning classroom procedures, reviewing material from last year and an old math friend, Math's Mate.

With Math's Mates, students solve tasks over the course of a week and correct their own work and keep track of their progress. The Math's Mate program consists of material from the current and/or previous year's math curriculum and helps with student's ability to retain math from year to year. Students will do these Math's Mates weekly and have an assessment every 4 weeks.  These Math's Mates give constant practice of student's ability to problem solve as well as develop basic math skills.

  Lunch Bunch Returns!

Lunch Bunch with Mrs. Freeman!

Lunch bunch will be starting this month. It is a small, informal group session designed to build self-esteem, social skills and increase peer relations. These groups are held during the students' lunch block. Students bring their lunches to my office where they listen to stories, have discussions and participate in activities. This is a great way to meet with all of the students at SMA and for them to get to know me and what my job is.

Some of the different topics we might touch on are kindness, friendship, careers, mindfulness, emotions, and self-confidence. A special invitation is sent to a small group of students in the class. Students are chosen at random and all students will have a chance to participate throughout the year. The students are picked up after their recess and then dropped off at the cafeteria for the end of their lunch block.

The students who participated last year really enjoyed their lunch bunch and have been asking when I will start! I have many ideas and plans for this year!

  Forms

 Forms, Forms, Forms!

It's the beginning of the school year and that can only mean one thing.... forms!  This week we sent home the handbook acknowledgement form (signing and returning indicates that you have read the handbook with your child), the Photography/Media Release form and the Blackboard Connect form.

This last form is used to record what phone number(s) you would like the school to use for the delivery of automated messages. The success of this calling system is only as successful as the contact information we have.  All numbers will be entered and anyone listed as primary will be notified for non-emergency messages such as school closings or routine reminders about school events.  In the case of an emergency, all numbers listed will be notified.

And don't forget to update during the school year if anything changes!

Signature Event!

        St. Michael's Academy
            Signature Event
           October 28, 2017

In order to raise awareness, celebrate and honor our heritage, and encourage financial support of Catholic education, St. Michael's Academy will be hosting our first Signature Event on October 28, 2017. This fun evening of celebration will allow guests to reminisce about school years gone by and will include dinner and an auction.  Of particular highlight will be a showcase of extensive memorabilia from the 14 original Catholic elementary schools in Springfield.

Our theme, "Honoring our Heritage, Celebrating the Present, Shaping the Future" captures the three distinct groups of students we are celebrating: our alumni, our current students, and the future leaders of tomorrow.  For some alumni, this will be a walk down memory lane.  For all participants, this will be an investment in the future of Catholic education!

We will be sending home a flyer next week to all of our families that we would like you to pass on to someone you think might be interested in attending this exciting fun-filled evening.  Help us spread the word! For more information, please contact Phyllis Lund at p.lundsmaspringfield.org or (413) 782-5246 ext. 1202.

Eager Expectations

Eighth grade is the culminating year at St. Michael's Academy.  It is a year of excited anticipation.  The year where all the important skills learned throughout the years come to play as the work and learning become more independent than in past years at SMA.  One eighth grader explained it well as shown in the Student Writing Gallery.  Learn about our eighth graders anticipation of the year ahead on the SMA webpage at www.smaspringfield.org , Student Life, Student Writing Gallery, Eighth Grade.
