Wed., Sept. 13, 6:15pm, Village Hall

Summary:
Sept. 7, 5:30pm, Village Hall
Approved: Items 1-5, 6-8. Item #6: Review Only, No Vote; Item #9: Tabled

Public Hearing Mon., Sept. 11, 7pm, Village Hall

Trash Collection Program Changes Proposed - Public Hearing Mon., Sept. 11, 7pm:
The Village Board is in the process of reviewing the Trash Collection Program and is considering moving to an automated system. Automated collection involves the use of a truck equipped with an automated arm, which allows the operator to empty trash carts and then return carts to their original position without leaving the cab of the vehicle (under normal circumstances).
The Village Board has scheduled a Public Hearing for residents about the potential change to an automated collection system. The Public Hearing will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, September 11th in the Village Board Room (2nd Floor) at Whitefish Bay Village Hall. Alternately, residents may submit written feedback via email to Communications Specialist Jenny Heyden by clicking here.

Trash Quick Facts - Potential Automated Trash Collection Program
1. Each household would receive a free trash collection cart from the Village. This cart would be identical in size and shape to the recycling cart previously provided.
2. Weekly collection would take place on the same day that households currently receive pick-up. Households would be responsible for bringing the trash cart to the curb (within 10 feet) or to the alley edge.

Trash Why is the Village Board Considering a Change to Trash Collection?
1. Cost Savings: The conversion to an automated trash collection system would reduce Village annual trash collection operation and maintenance costs by an estimated $105,585 per year.

2. Resident Satisfaction. Environmental/Aesthetic Benefits: The use of uniform, covered trash carts helps to prevent littering due to blowing of uncovered trash items.

3. Improved safety for Village employees:  Currently each Village trash collector lifts between 6,000 and 9,000 pounds of garbage and walks between 10 to 12 miles per day (in all weather conditions) pushing a collection cart up and down driveways, sidewalks and streets. As a result, Village collectors have sustained shoulder, arm, hand, back and knee injuries.
In addition, sharps disposed of in trash bags and cans without proper containers also pose a puncture risk as the Village trash collectors perform their duties. Chemical containers have also been found to be hidden in trash bags. These can break open when the collection truck hopper is compacted, resulting in Village trash collectors being exposed to the disbursement of chemicals and/or fumes.

Trash Timetable
If approved, conversion to an automated trash collection system would occur in Spring of 2018 (to correspond with the already approved change to the Recycling Collection Program).

Trash/Recycling Feedback
If you are unable to attend the public hearing but would like to submit thoughts in writing, please respond to this email or mail to Trash Collection Public Hearing, c/o Village Hall, 5300 N. Marlborough Dr., Whitefish Bay, WI 53217.

Local public health departments are constantly working behind-the-scenes to prepare for emergencies. Since 2002, the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement program has provided vital resources to ensure communities can effectively respond to infectious disease outbreaks; chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear threats; and natural disasters. Working with hospitals, first responders, and other groups such as Red Cross, local health departments develop plans and conduct exercises to practice emergency situations before they happen. But we can't do it all, and that's why individuals also need to prepare.

This September marks the fourteenth annual National Preparedness Month, created to raise public awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness and encourage Americans to take action. Each year, throughout the month of September, more than 3,000 public and private organizations at the national, state, and local levels promote guidelines and resources on planning for and effectively responding to life-threatening disasters. Ultimately, National Preparedness Month aims to ensure every American has the skills to protect themselves and their families during an emergency.

Week one highlights the importance of individuals and families being READY. Many emergencies happen without warning, so it is important that you take steps ahead of time to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Three steps to being ready are:
  • Have a kitYou may not have access to food, water or electricity for several days after an emergency. Make sure to have water (1 gallon/person/day) and food (non-perishable foods; remember the can opener), plus medications, flashlights and batteries. More ideas can be found here: https://emergency.cdc.gov/preparedness/kit/disasters/

  • Make a plan: Talk to your loved ones about the steps to take in different types of emergencies and how you will contact one another.

  • Stay informed: Watch TV, check internet sites, and get a battery-operated or hand-crank radio in case of electrical failure. Make sure you get the information you need when an emergency happens.
